Playing mpeg files in Windows 10

I have a new computer with Windows 10 and am unable to play home videos in mpeg format.  They will not play in Media Player or the Movies & TV player.  I have checked all updates with Microsoft and nothing seems to work.  Do I just need to buy an app to play them?  Thanks for your help.

    ME,

Before you buy anything, check out VLC.  Runs well on Windows 10, plays pretty much anything, and free.  Plus, downloading this is a lot easier than hunting around for the right codec packs for WMP or Movies & TV.  For what you're doing, I'd skip the Windows Store version and get it from here:

    Hope that works for you.

I was trying to open an mpeg video that didn't work with windows media player, but with the VLC player, it works very well.

    Thanks RDrewD2 for your advice.
