Service Registration missing or corrupt – FIXED

I was having the same problem as many others, Windows Update was sloooowww !

I ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter, it said that the Service Registration was missing or corrupt, and not fixed.

So I searched this site, and found some suggested solutions that I was afraid to try ( I am a real amateur ).

On a whim, I removed update KB3138612, which supposedly “contains some improvements to Windows Update Client in Windows 7 SP1”.

I then re-ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter, Service Registration was FIXED.

Ran Windows Update, 2 minutes and done!

KB3138612 was offered again as Important. - - - I did not install this !

Perhaps I am on to something – anyone else care to try this?

Tom

On its Knowledge Base article, Microsoft helpfully says "This update contains some improvements to Windows Update Client." I briefly searched online for more information, but found nothing of use.

Recently, customers have raised concerns about Microsoft's lack of transparency regarding its software updates. It seems that the company has recently adopted a policy of  vague communication policy instead of being transparent with its customers about what its updates contain.

If the update is causing problems for you, then I would suggest hiding it.

My problem is very similar.  The update I’m trying to install is:  Intel Corporation driver update for Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600.  However it couldn't be installed and gaveerror code 80070103.  I ran a diagnostic program that shows it's an error that the program couldn't fix and says “service registration is missing or corrupt, with an error code of**Ox80070057(201608018-T-09_16_17A.  After reading about update KB3138612 that was causing a problem, I looked for it on my PC but I don't have it.  Now I have no idea what to do.  My PC is set for manual updates which I check weekly because I don't want W10.  This is an update I've been trying to install for a couple of weeks; it'll download but cannot install.  Thoughts anyone???

Hey Tom, it worked for me too. Windows 7 users, do not install updates that say anything about Windows 10. I do not want Windows 10. This update had slid by me. Thanks Tom.

OK - One more suggestion.  It is always better to go to the source for drivers, and not those third party sites.

Try this site, and their utility should show you if you need an updated driver or not, and if so you will be able to download the correct one from here.

    Good luck.

    Hello Woolaroc,

Have you tried running the Windows Update Troubleshooter?

If you run this, and then try right away to install the Intel driver you might be successful.

    Find the Troubleshooter here:

      https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/instantanswers/512a5183-ffab-40c5-8a68-021e32467565/windows-update-troubleshooter

KB3138612 may have been pulled but replaced by another that also supposedly contains some improvements to Windows Update Client.

    Good Luck
