Can I use 2019 CALs for 2016 RDS Hosts?

I have the following setup:

  • 1 RDS Farm with 5 2016 RDS Hosts running an application compatible only with 2016.
  • 1 RDS Farm with 4 2019 RDS Hosts running another set of applications.
  • 1 License server used for both farms with 2019 per User CALs registered.
  • I have a pool of users which access both the 2016 and 2019 Farms. Can I use the same 2019 CALs for the 2016 RDS Farm, or do I need to downgrade a subset of my CALs to 2016? Ideally, since this is the same user base I want them to use the same per User CAL for both environments.

Thanks.

Yes, the RDS Cals are backward compatible.

Totally go along with DSPatrick. Unless RDP failed, typically you don't have to downgrade CALs to match the RDS farm.
