Not every old program and game responds to compatibility mode. If you have tried every method and nothing works, the game is not compatible.

Midway, the games owner is embroiled in a Chapter 11 bankruptcy presently, and it is doubtful in the extreme that any further development work will be done to make any of the Midway games run in Windows 7..

The only games I've found from '05 that have a problem with Win7 are due to the copy protection.

Starforce is perhaps the worst, followed by Tages and SecureRom. In most cases it is a problem with 64bit OS's (XP too).

In some cases   the game will install and give an error message to the effect that it cannot finish, but the game is in fact installed, but the DRM is not.

Games that use Tages can sometimes be fixed with their 64bit update -

TAGES, the AAA Copy Protection System.

Some games can be installed onto a 32bit machine and copied to the 64bit machine and will run (not sure in this case).

Other games will run with a noCD patch. There is a noCD fix at Mega Games (PC fixes left column of home page). The A51 fix more complex than most as it has several files which I assume (don't have the game) all go in the main install folder with the A51.exe. I usually move the original .exe (and other files)  into a new folder for backup before moving the new ones into the games install folder.

Then - as has been suggested by MH, some just are not doable, or may require a Virtual Machine -

    |MG| VirtualBox 4.1.10.76836 Download

In my collection (100+)  there have only been two - Beyond Good and Evil (not the re-release) and Splinter Cell Chaos Theory that I have not found a fix/workaround for (I haven't tried a VM).

If there is a fan site for Area 51 there may be fixes available from the community.

I found a 64bit installer for the old  classic Grim Fandango on one such site.

I also got the install error but after a lot of searching found the solution. It is now working on both my computers.

    My two computers:

    Computer 1: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

    Computer 2: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

    Install Area 51 game:

    1. Create folder on hard drive and copy contents of all 3 CDs to it. ex. D:\Setup
    2. Open Notepad and add text:

    msiexec /i  "Area 51(R).msi" /q

    1. Save as "setup.bat" to same folder as setup ex. D:\Setup
    2. Open Start>Accessories>Command Prompt
    3. From command line execute batch file, for example:

    D:\Setup\setup.bat

Area 51 still needs to be patched so obtain patch file "a51_us_patch_1_2.exe"

The antivirus program might object so you might have to override it

    Patch Area 51 game:

    1. Create patch folder, ex. D:\Patch
    2. Double click on "a51_us_patch_1_2.exe"
    3. Extract to patch folder, ex. D:\Patch
    4. Select all files in patch folder and copy them to where game is installed

The default game location is "C:\Program Files (x86)\Midway Games\Area 51"

    1. Overwrite any existing files

    Note alternate batch file:

You can change the install directory by using the INSTALLDIR option. For example to install it to the E: drive use this batch file:

    msiexec /i  "Area 51(R).msi" INSTALLDIR="E:\Program Files (x86)\Midway Games\Area 51"  /q

Got it running. Not sure if it's just because of te updates to win, directx etc or something else since this is an old post. It just worked on win 7 x64 for me (dopeman version comes with this .exe). But I do remember it not working as well, that's why I ended up here before I actually tried the game after install. The only thing others may not have is, that I recently installed nGlide. I also tried this version, but it told me that I wasn't connected to the internet but I was (and am). Replaced the .exe that came with dopeman which makes that version work also.
