werconcpl.dll and catastrophic failure

Anonymous

Hey there,

I keep getting the following error message 'There was a problem starting C:\WINDOWS\system32\WerConCpl.dll the specific module could not be found'.

I have a replacement werconcpl.dll but when I attempt to copy it over to my system32 folder it tells me that I do not have sufficient privileges and that 'TrustedInstaller' can only modify this.

So when I go into system32 properties and try to set it so that I have full control I get the following message: 'Unable to display the user selection dialogue. Catastrophic failure'.

As you can imagine this feels like I am chasing my tail quite a bit, any help or advice will be MASSIVELY appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Louis

    Hi,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Community.

I understand that you get a message “RunDLL error:  C:\WINDOWS\system32\WerConCpl.dll ”

This is a windows system file and this file might be corrupted due to following reasons.

    Improper shutdown.

    Registry corruption.

I would suggest you to follow the below suggestions and check if it helps.

    Method 1: SFC scan

This is a system file check scan which will automatically check for system file errors and try to rectify the problem.

    https://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833

Please follow the article which will guide you to initiate SFC scan and check if it helps.

    Method 2: Clean boot

Putting your system in Clean Boot state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue. You need to follow the steps from the article mentioned below to perform a Clean Boot.

How to perform a clean boot in Windows

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: After troubleshooting, refer to this section "How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting"

For system restore error code “0x80070571” Please follow the below step:

Run Check Disk in Command Prompt

To run “ChkDsk” utility using Command Prompt, you can follow these steps:

    a) Press “Windows Logo” + “X” keys on the keyboard and select “Command Prompt (Admin)” from the list.

    b)  In the command prompt window, type “chkdsk /r” and press “ENTER”.

    c) Answer “Y” when “chkdsk” asks you if you want to check the drive next time computer boots  (restarts).

Important: While performing Error-checking or ChkDsk on the hard drive, if any bad sectors are found and when attempting to repair that sector, the data available on that sector might be lost.

Hope this information helps. For any further Windows related assistance, feel free to contact us and we will be happy to help.
