To try and rule out connection problems, I tried both a LTE connection and a WLAN connection, two different ISPs, but still the same error.
code 80072efd windows update - Windows 7
I have recently formatted laptop with manufacturer recovery disk. I see code 80072efd error "Windows could not search for new updates". Periodically, I also experience extremely slow performance which leads laptop to stop responding. When I restart laptop sometime it works and sometimes it would not work. Sometimes I will have to restart 5 to 10 times using power button before even I see login screen. Sometimes it will work perfectly fine.
Any recommendation will be appreciated.

2016-03-30T09:18:02+00:00 I am also having the same problem. I am using Windows 7 Pro with SP1 64-bit (Version 6.1 Build 7601: Service Pack 1)
I have no 3rd party anti virus software installed, or other firewall/proxy software. System File Checker Tool reports no errors, and a clean boot did not solve the problem either.
Please help :-)
