Defrag will not work due to customized setting created by another program

When I try to do a defrag, I get a message saying "Disk derangement is currently using customized settings created by another program"

Before you can modify the schedule, you must remove the customized settings.  Below this message are 2 boxes, 1 says 'remove settings' and the other says 'cancel'.  When I click  "remove settings" I get taken back to the desktop. this repeats its self each time I try to defrag,   It will  not open as administrator or in "SAFE MODE"

Dell Inspirion 1545

Windows 7.      64 Bit     with over 70 %  space available..

I am a little tech savvy if things are explained well enough.

Can any one help

Thanks much

You have a few options. I finally got my rig working.

  1. Completely reformat
  2. **** at microsoft
  3. Take the computer to a microsoft store, and they will fix it for free (why? because w10 and they know it causes problems)

W10 revert back to w7 installed improperly. Your computer is still trying to act like w10 is still there, even tho it isnt.

So what I did, which i wouldnt recommend, is getting a Philippine lady from a call center(microsoft) to work on, and fix my computer. They made it MUCH worse. (I already made sure at this point that microsoft will be fixing my computer for free because of w10) So after the lady basically fried my computer, i brought my rig to the closest microsoft store and they fix everything, for free.

NOW, after i brought my computer home, I downloaded a 3rd party program called GWX control panel. What this does, is removes all W10 possible updates, removes the auto upgrade POS feature, and block all future w10 updates.

http://ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/  ----> Click for GWX

If you do not use this program, w10 will automatically upgrade AGAIN!!!! Even though microsoft says this is a rare occurrence DONT BELIEVE IT!! This is a widespread issue, and microsoft is FORCING it to happening.

Needless to say, I have lost faith in microsoft because of the faulty software programming. (even my xbox one...) So i will not be buying anymore more microsoft products, because of these blantly bad business practices.

Sorry this happened to you, and I understand the frustration. Especially if younever wanted w10 in the first place.

Non of these options above helped. My computer recently auto upgraded to windows 10 (grr shame on you microsoft for forcing a product i dont want one me, bad business) I reverted back to windows 7.

Now since that whole ordeal happend, my disk defrag stopped working.  "Disk derangement is currently using customized settings created by another program""

I also tried to open the Task Scheduler which resulted in {EF0E1F49-6934-47F2-896C-4030096DD2BD}: The task image is corrupt or has been tampered with.

I tried disabled my Anti Virus software as well to no avail. Im running out of options and patience. If this has to do with the whole windows 10 upgrade(which i truly believe is the root of the evil since thats when it all started), i would LOVE/require a physical hands on approach from Microsoft to compensate for the intrusive programming forced upon my computer and myself

I also tried the methods you suggested, I had to turn on my disk defragmenter but it is started now but still on manual.  Plus, I went into the Event viewer and what a mess that is.  Under Administrative Events, there is 3,464 events caused by source : Distributed COM and Bonjour Service.  The disk defragmenter still won't run for me, still says 'using customized settings by another program'. I also upgraded to Windows 10 then reverted back to Windows 7. That is when computer started acting up.  Please help me, need  to defrag.

    Hi John,

Thank you choosing Microsoft Community Forums.

Based on the description I see that you are not able to do disk defragment on Windows 7.

I would like to inform you that this could be because of the Virus or malware on the disk.

To help you better please answer these questions:

    1.      Have you made any recent changes on the computer prior to the issue?

    2.      Do you receive any error message?

I would suggest you to perform the methods provided to resolve the issue:

    Method 1:

Check if the Disk Defragmenter service is running.

    a. Click Start and type services.msc in the search box.

    b. On the Services window,  look for Disk Defragmenter service and Click OK.

    c. Check if the status of the Disk Defragmenter service is set to Automatic.

    Method 2:

Step 1: Run the virus scan Microsoft Safety Scanner

    http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

Note: Any data files that are infected may only be cleaned by deleting the file entirely, which means there is a potential for data loss.

Step 2: Disable the Third Party security program.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/disable-antivirus-software

Important Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Method 3: Run the SFC scan on your computer.

SFC /scannow is a super-useful command you can use in any Windows version. When the SFC (System File Checker) command is used with the /scannow switch, the tool will scan all of the important Windows files on your computer and replace them as necessary.

    Method 4: Check Event Viewer:

Also check Event Viewer entries to find the faulty module that could be causing this issue.

    a. Open Event Viewer by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, clicking Administrative Tools, and then double-clicking Event Viewer.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

    b. Click an event log in the left pane.

    c. Double-click an event to view the details of the event and let us know the faulty module that is causing the issue.

Access the below links to know more about Event Viewer:

    Open Event Viewer:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Open-Event-Viewer

What information appears in event logs (Event Viewer)?
