So, I have read other posts regarding this update and here is what has happened to me as I have been unable to add to any other thread.  I have rebuilt a older acer laptop for my brother-in.  Twice now I have completed the windows 7 home premium install and all updates to service pack 1 with no issues.  On both occasions windows has updated windows agent to v7.6.7600.320 and suddenly a further updated hang at "checking for updates".  I get no error message, nothing it just sits there.  I have NOT installed ANY software on this computer at all other than windows 7 64 bit home premium.  I also tried the "fix it"......right.

    Ken,

Just an update for you, I have finished re-installing windows 7 x64 with no internet connectivity.  I then attempted to install KB3083710 and received a popup message saying "The update is not applicable to your computer", so what now?  I have not done anything else.

There is a solution and it works very well....

    Windows Update fix (new)

The following procedure applies in the case of install (re-install) of Windows 7.  It does not apply to usual, normal updating.

I am afraid you are going have to do the re-install again.  Not a terrible penalty to pay.  Usually takes way less than an hour.  Then, immediately proceed with the following procedure.   It is strange, but it really does work and a lot of people have proven it.

NEVER install anything but Windows Updates until your system is up to date.  Once you have the update list, install all of them together.  Installing updates in batches will not speed the process or make it better.

    1. BEFORE you start the re-install, download (32 or 64 bit) KB3083710 and KB3102810 in advance, and store on a USB stick
    2. Start and complete the re-install of Windows 7 SP1
    3. BEFORE the newly installed system can go online for the first time, disconnectthe computer from the Internet.  This timing is critical.  The system must NOT have access to the Internet when it starts.
    4. Manually install KB3083710 and restart.
    5. Manually install KB3102810 and restart.
    6. Restore the Internet connection and launch Windows Update as normal.
    7. After a few minutes, you should have plenty of updates to download and install.

    Thanks to Ken Morely
