When you imply that Windows Update is no help, have you selected Windows Update either from the pop up when the printer is first connected or from the Add printer wizard page?
If you haven't done that, do the following:
- Disconnect your printer
- Go to Devices and Printers
- Click any icon in the "Devices and Printers" category (if you have NO items in this category, post back for alternate directions)
- Click on the "Print server properties" link that appeared in the toolbar of Devices and Printers when you clicked on the link in #2
- Click the "Drivers" tab
- Click the "Add" button
- When the "Add Printer Driver Wizard" opens, click Next
- Select the operating system(s) and click Next
- In the "Printer Driver Selection" window, click HP in the left pane and scroll through the right pane. Slow your scrolling when you get to the Deskjet section. You're looking for "HP Deskjet 6500 Series" --
10. If the Deskjet 6500 Series is present, select it, click Next, and then click Finish
11. If the Deskjet 6500 Series is NOT present, click the Windows Update button. Go have lunch. When you come back, look again and Deskjet 6500 Series should now be present. Click Next and then click Finish.
12. Connect your printer and it should install properly.
