Hello Russell,
Thank you for the reply.
I appreciate your patience.
It is unfortunate that the CD/DVD drive cannot play Blu-ray discs.
However, please feel free to reply, if you have any other issues with Windows.
Thank you

Hello Community...
My machine is ASUS A43S Notebook and has the Slimtype DVD A DS8A5SH CD Rom drive...
Well, I tried to play some "Blu-ray movies" and I only get in the properties tab... Unknown Disc...
NOTE: DVD movies play fine....
So I tried a couple things...
(1) Installed the VLC Blu-ray player software (of course)
NOTE: the VLC player works great for DVD movies but will NOT play Blu-ray....
(2) I tried to up-date driver.... but the driver is up-date... Sure, I search the internet and my drive is the best one. Microsoft 6.1.7601.17514 release date 6/21/2006
And nothing I have done will make my CD Rom drive play Bul-ray....
Community Any suggestions...?????
I am led to believe that the Slimtype DVD A DS8A5SH just is NOT a Blu-ray Player...
thanks

Hello Ratandeep,
Thank you so much for all your support.
Let me tell you ASUS just replied to me.
It it is the limitations of the drive itself.
Only DVD and will not play Blu-Ray.
THANK YOU,
Russell
Hello Russell,
Thank you for your response.
I appreciate your time.
I would suggest you to update chipset drivers from this link and check.
Please also try to update CD-ROM drivers and check. Please follow these steps:
a. Press Windows + R keys together, type devmgmt.msc in run window and press Enter.
b. Click to expand "DVD/CD-ROM drives", right click the drive and click "Update Driver Software".
c. Now, follow on-screen instructions.
Please keep us updated.
Thank you
Thank You Ratandeep,
Sure - troubleshooter found a problem.... but could not fix it...
Sure - I understand about the required codec to be able to read Blu-ray.... but, I have to guess these required codec's came along with the VLC Player Software - right?
Anyway... still open to some suggestions...
Or maybe just the Slimtype DVD A DS8A5SH CD ROM drive is ONLY for DVD and no matter what you do... it will never read Blu-ray? - don't know...
Because when Blu-ray first came out... wasn't it something about the actual light was 'Blue' as opposed to 'white'... via term Blu-ray..???
So, maybe the Slimtype DVD A DS8A5SH has a 'white' light and will never read Blu-ray - don't know
Thanks again
Russell
Hello Russ,
Thank you for posting your question on Microsoft community.
I appreciate you for providing details about the issue.
This issue may occur due to incorrect disc-playing settings or if a required Blu-ray codec is missing or not installed.
I would suggest you to try following methods and check if it helps.
Method 1:
Run playing and burning CDs, DVDs, and Blu‑ray Discs troubleshooter and check.
Refer:
Open the Playing and Burning CDs, DVDs, and Blu‑ray Discs troubleshooter
It checks for common issues, such as what kind of disc you've inserted in your disc drive and whether the drive supports playing or burning content to a disc.
If it does not help, use method 2.
Method 2:
Please install a Blu-ray codec required to play Blu-ray disc.
Refer this article:
Codecs: frequently asked questions
A codec is software that is used to compress or decompress a digital media file, such as a song or video. Windows Media Player and other programs use codecs to play and create digital media files.
Note: Use caution when installing codecs that you find on the Internet, particularly some of the free codec packs that claim to include codecs from a wide variety of companies or organizations. Incompatibilities are known to exist with some of the components in these codec packs that can cause serious playback issues in the Player and other players, lead to system corruption, and make it difficult for Microsoft Support to diagnose and troubleshoot playback issues. For these reasons, we strongly discourage you from installing these codec packs, and recommend that you remove them if you have installed them and you are having problems with the Player. Install only codecs, filters, or plug-ins from trusted, authorized sources, such as the website of the official supplier. Even then, use caution: some codec suppliers offer minimal customer support. Before installing any digital media components, set a system restore point. The restore point enables you to return to your original system configuration, if necessary.
I hope this information helps.
Please do let us know if you need any further assistance.
