Conexant SmartAudio Problems

I have a Lenovo G500 laptop with windows 8.1. I have been having a recurring problem with my audio driver (Conexant SmartAudio HD) basically since I got the laptop, about 2 or 3 times a day the sound would randomly stop working. When I go to click on a youtube video or whatever there would simply be no sound coming from the video and I don't know why. The only way I can deal with this is disabling the driver, re-enable it then restart my laptop. I've tried uninstalling it and re-installing it, I've tried updating it from the device manager and from lenovo's site (there doesn't seem to be anything on conexant's site) but nothing works. I've been told it could be a hardware issue but I don't think it is because for a while I've used a different driver and I have never had problems with it. The reason I didn't stick with the other driver is because the Conexant driver has better quality sound (when it's working). Is there any solution to this problem with the Conexant driver? If not then is there any other audio drivers I can download that has good quality sound, any recommendations?

Edit

Just want to point out there is no exclamation mark or any kind of warning symbol next to the driver in device manager. It seem the computer doesn't even detect the problem.

Similarly happen on my Asus Zenbook UX303LN (i7-5500U) , the audio output reduced compared to the original driver on windows 8.1. This is the fresh install of Windows 10 build 10586.36 using the default Conexant SmartAudio HD Driver.

When I launched the Conexant SmartAudio HD software (Windows 10 Automated preinstalled) and activate the night mode button do make the sound louder, but than the effect was reversed where the audio should toned down if the night mode was activated.

windows 10 overwrote my driver - and lost the smart audio app - and graphic equaliser - which version do you have please ? I have the same machine and would like to restore the correct version

    Hello Adam,

Thank you for keeping us updated on the status of the issue.

It seems that there are still some corrupted drivers existing in the device manager. Let’s work together to get this problem resolved.

I would suggest you to try the following steps to uninstall all the hidden driversand restart the computer. Let the Windows install the generic drivers and then see if it helps you to fix the issue.

    1. Press Windows key + X, Click on Command Prompt (Admin).

Note: If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or clickAllow.

    1. Command prompt Window will be open.
    2. At the command prompt, type the following lines, pressing Enterafter each line:

    set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1

    cd\ %SystemRoot% \System32

    start devmgmt.msc

    1. Device Manager Window will open.
    2. Click on show hidden devices under View menu Tab.****
    3. Expand all the nods under device manager**.**

****7. There would be many greyed out entries in device manager uninstall all the greyed out entries under all the nods and also sound card drivers.

    1. Follow the onscreen instructions to uninstall the current version of the driver.
    2. Restart the computer. On restart, Windows will re-install the generic drivers automatically.

Note: You may also try to install latest sound card driver from the Lenovo website.

    Hope the information helps.

    Hi Adam,

Thank you for providing detailed information about this issue. I apologize for the inconvenience caused to you. I appreciate your efforts towards resolving the issue.

The issue can be caused due to sound driver being missing, corrupted or outdated or some third-party software conflict.

Let's try these methods below and check.

    Method 1: Run audio troubleshooter

You might be able to solve some problems by running a troubleshooter that will automatically fix some common issues with audio.

Follow the steps to run the troubleshooter:

    1. Press Windows key + C on your keyboard to show the Charms bar.
    2. Type Troubleshooting and click Troubleshooting under Settings.
    3. Now select Find and Fix Problems.
    4. Select Troubleshoot Audio Playback.
    5. Follow the prompted steps to troubleshoot this issue.

If the issue persists, follow method 2.

Method 2: Check in compatibility mode.

You may try to install the drivers in compatibility mode.

    1. Right click on downloaded driver setup file.
    2. Click on Properties.
    3. Click on Compatibility tab.
    4. Put a check mark on Run this program in compatibility mode for.
    5. Select Windows 7.
    6. Put a check mark on Run this program as an administrator under Privilege Level.

You may try to run the game in compatibility mode.

**Make older programs compatible with this version of Windows**

If the issue persists, follow method 3.

    Method 3: Perform Clean Boot.

I would suggest you to place your computer in clean boot for couple of hours and check if you have any issues with the sound card.

Placing your system in Clean Boot state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue. You need to follow the steps from the article mentioned below to perform a Clean Boot.

How to perform a “clean boot” in Windows, please follow the steps in the link provided below.

Note: Refer "How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting" to reset the computer to start as normal after troubleshooting.
