I just purchased a Samsung Portable SSD T1 - 1 terabyte solid state external hard drive. I cannot install it on my PC running Windows 8.1. Samsung help was unable to solve the problem and recommended I contact Windows. Any suggestions?

    Samsung recommended that you "contact Windows" .. ? .. ? .. ! .. ? .. ?

Does this drive work when plugged into ANY computer?

One with Windows 7?  One with Windows 10?  One with OS X?   One with some flavor of Linux?

Does any other external USB drive work on this particular computer when connected?

What do you mean by 'install'?  It's an external USB drive.  It should just plug into a USB port and allow you to BROWSE the contents of the drive without any 'install' to speak of *if* your USB ports (usually your motherboard chipset drivers) are installed and working properly.

Did Samsung have you look under Disk Management after connecting it to see if it appears at all?

It is an ENCRYPTED drive, much like IronKey USB sticks.  It has a small partition on it that has the software that allows it to be unlocked.  Essentially - it is more than just a plain USB drive due to the software encryption it ships with.

That's what was going on there.

Did they have to run it in compatibility mode?

Thanks you, Stanley. I got through to the Windows technician who resolved the problem - I'm not quite sure how, but it now works. Since the drive is straight out of the box, I did not try it on another machine. And i have used many USB devices with no problem. In contrast to other external drives, the Samsung does have to be installed - I can't tell you why. I had to download the installation software from the Samsung site and then install it, and there were some peculiarities that the Windows technician resolved by changing sysconfig.
