Hello Philip,

I would like to know some information about the issue so that we could help you better.

Is your computer infected by Ransomware?

I appreciate you for providing details about your query.

BitLocker Drive Encryption is a data protection feature that integrates with the operating system and addresses the threats of data theft or exposure from lost, stolen, or inappropriately decommissioned computers.

For reference:

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/itpro/windows/keep-secure/bitlocker-overview

Ransomware stops you from using your PC. It holds your PC or files for "ransom".

Ransomware can:

  • Prevent you from accessing Windows.
  • Encrypt files so you can't use them.
  • Stop certain apps from running (like your web browser).

BitLocker may help in preventing Ransomware.

However, you may use steps provided in this article to prevent Ransomwareeffectively.

Refer:

https://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/mmpc/shared/ransomware.aspx

Important Notes:

Any data files that are infected may only be cleaned by deleting the file entirely, which means there is a potential for data loss.

Modifying BIOS/ complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk.

I hope this information helps.

Please do let us know if you need any further assistance.

Thank you

I do not have a problem, but the local paper has made an issue of Ransomware so I am investigating all the options.  My best protection appears to be a Samsung T3 SSD USB3 device which I connect only to back up all my data, then disconnect.

Thank you for your BitLocker insights.  The article suggested if your data is already encrypted, ransomware cannot re-encrypt it.
