Change OEM Product ID to a retail product ID

Anonymous
2016-05-01T18:15:26+00:00

I have tried to install Windows 7 professional on a computer that has a OEM product ID and was running Windows Home.  I formatted the disc and installed Windows 7, it was genuine and was activated, but the OEM product ID remained and I cannot update Windows 7. IE and security updates work so the computer can access the internet but not windows update.  How do I get rid of the OEM Product ID and/or get Microsoft to allow updating?

    Hi,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

With the issue description, I understand that you want to remove the OEM Product ID from your Windows 7 machine. I will certainly help you in getting this fixed.

I would like to inform you that OEM Licenses are locked to the first computer on which they are installed and activated, and cannot be moved to another computer under any circumstances.

There seems to be two types of OEM versions available.  The branded OEM version from large computer makers such as HP, Dell and Lenovo.  These can be BIOS locked but it would never seem to be locked by MAC address.

Then, there is the generic OEM version, which does not have any type of LOCK locally on the PC.  This is for the small OEM PC builders.

As for the "activate by phone" method, it can be conceived that you can be considered as the "OEM" builder.

How to activate Windows 7 manually (activate by phone)

    1. Click Start, and in the Search box type: slui.exe  4
    2. Next press the ‘ENTER’ key
    3. Select your ‘Country’ from the list.
    4. Choose the ‘Phone Activation’ option.
    5. Stay on the phone (do not select/press any options) and wait for a person to help you with activation.
    6. Explain your problem clearly to the support person.

My Win 7 is activated and is listed as genuine. I just cannot download updaters because the install did not fill hrOnline. (MGADiag).

The OEM Product ID is NOT held in the BIOS with Windows 7, only 8 onwards introduced the actual key being held on the system and did away with requiring labels to be fitted.

The SLIC table entry is used by the OEM operating system provided by manufacturers to verify it is running on a legitimate system. This for example prevents a Dell image being used on an HP computer but it also prevents users upgrading systems illegally with the right manufacturer image. The key itself is held in the recovery image files provided by the manufacturer.

The question is where did you get your Pro image from? A retail pack or a single OEM pack would have its own key which you would have had to enter during setup and these ignore the SLIC entry, it makes no difference if the product versions do not match. You cannot change the SLIC entry and HP wouldn't do it either.

    Download and run the following:

when it completes click on the copy button, nothing will happen but open a reply on here and paste to let us see the result.

My problem is not activation, My Win 7 pro was marked as genuine and I assume that means it is activated.

My problem is that it will not update. I assumed it is because the Product ID is still listed as an OEM ID.  I am not trying to move an operating system. I have bought a full version of Windows 7 Professional and formatted the disc before installing.  It is helpful to know the OEM product ID on my HP computer is in the BIOS.  Do I contact HP to change the BIOS?  I have an upper range hearing loss and have difficulty hearing female or SE Asian accents; is their any way of getting help through chat?
