WerFault.exe Failed To Start

This isn't a pressing issue to me, I'm just curious to see what could have caused it.

Get on my laptop for the evening, start up Skype and loading a large amount of photos and files from a group chat, about 100 or so photos and a few files over 5 Megabytes each, while waiting I start doing the usual opening copious amounts of Internet Explorer.

All is well for about a minute, then my laptop starts lagging - badly. We're talking the cursor even lagging, which for the way I treat this notebook, almost scared me, I opened Task Manager from (Start) + R and just as it had started to display on screen, my screen goes blank and my laptop makes a very loud and long beeping sound, the display comes back onwith only a message box saying that WerFault.exe had failed to start, a jumble of letters and numbers, and ended with "Would you like to terminate the application?" with only a "OK" button, and before I could even do anything the screen turns off again, like not even the backlight was on, so I'm sitting terrified for another moment, then the screen comes back on with only the System Tray taking up the entire screen, but the WerFault.exe Error Message box was still on screen, and the Taskbar was back and on the bottom of the screen where it belongs, but was stretched out because the System Tray wasn't attached to it, then it goes to a full purple screen and stays a few seconds, flashes between black and purple a couple of times, then comes back in purple with "Getting Windows Ready" on screen, my desktop wallpaper comes on but it still has a purple box around "Getting Windows Ready" in the center, then the wallpaper turns solid dark blue and then "Getting Windows Ready" goes away, and then the cursor comes back with the Windows Aero theme "Working In Background" spinner and cursor, and finally it loads the login screen on the display and I had to log back into my account. I swear I'm not making this up, it gave me a good startle and all of this occurred in about a minute or so. If anyone has any guesses of what in the world just happened to my laptop, I'd love to hear them.

I have a fan speed controller and at the time the fan was running at full speed if that helps, and the laptop was reading, last I had looked before this happened, 58 Degrees Celcius

    I have always seen people saying to press the Windows key + X, and I have never, NEVER had a PC that pressing the Windows key + X actually did anything, and on this laptop the active window flickers as though another window will open, but for a moment and returns to being the active window, I'll post back in a bit about sfc

    Hi,

    Sounds like a corrupt file somewhere. To fix it do the following.

    1. Hit Windows key + X and click "Command Prompt (Admin)".
    2. Type (or copy/paste) sfc /scannow and hit Enter.

    System File Checker will check Windows system files for corruption and try to fix any found.

    On occasions though it fails in which case you'll see the message: "Windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them".

    If you see that message, copy and then right click and paste the following command into the same command prompt and hit Enter:

    DISM.exe/Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

    When DISM runs all you'll see most of the time is a plain black window. But eventually the figure 20% will appear followed by 100% about 15 minutes later. You'll also get a report of what was fixed.

    If you see any error messages, make a note of them and post those here please.

    Did the computer pass all tests? Were there any problems with overheating, stuttering, crashes or BSODs? 

    I'd let the update application finish its work and restart the system and see if there's a problem after this. Contacting MS's live support may be a good idea too. :)

    Hi! :D

    I should have probably mentioned, I had spend the previous night stress testing my laptop like crazy from actual games up to Aida64 Enterprise and finished the night by letting Windows Update take over, when I woke up in the morning it was still updating, my guess taking this long since I hadn't given it the chance to update anything for two months, being that I had just been putting the laptop into Sleep mode when it was not in use, rather than shutting down

    Hi :)

    I believe this link might be of help in your case. 

    I'd try running some diagnostic tools on the different hardware parts as well as check if the OS and all drivers are a ll up to date. I'd run WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool in order to try to rule out the storage drive as the potential cause of the issue. If the drive passes both the quick and the extended tests it should be safe to use and shouldn't be causing any issues. 

    I'd also run some memory tests as well as other stress tests to see if the problem is cause by any hardware parts. This should narrow down the issue to either the hardware or the software. We can then take it from there. :)
