Unable to Defragment & Optimize the System Drive in Windows 10.

06/05/2016  Since upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10 about a month ago, I am not able to defragment the HP_Recovery (G) drive. It is now at 24% and needs to be defragmented.  After I scan the drive, the Disk Cleanup only shows Recycle Bin 0 Bytes under the files to delete.  Microsoft, do you have a driver or fix for this problem?

Volunteer Moderator/MVP update to locked thread:

Recovery partitions have large image files which are NEVER defragged.

Do not defrag SSD's or any drive except C: and possibly a data drive.

    Hello,

The hard disk drive (HDD) is the main, and usually largest, data storage hardware device in a computer.

The operating system, software titles and most other files are stored in the hard disk drive.

The Hard Disk Drive is Also Known As HDD (abbreviation), hard drive, hard disk, fixed drive, fixed disk, fixed disk drive. The hard drive is sometimes referred to as the "C drive" due to the fact that Microsoft Windows designates the "C" drive letter to the primary partition on the primary hard drive in a computer by default.

Short for Solid-State Drive or Solid-State Disk, SSD is a drive that uses non-volatile memory as a means of storing and accessing data, much like computer RAM. Unlike a hard drive, an SSD has no moving parts, which gives it advantages such as accessing stored information faster, no noise, often more reliable, and consuming less power. The picture shows a Crucial SSD and is an example of an SSD.

To identify if your Drive is HDD or SSD, follow the below steps:

    1. In the search window, type defragment and optimize drive and select it.
    2. In the new opened Windows it will display all the drives you have on your system and next to it, it will show whether its an HDD or SSD.

Hope it helps. We will be happy to assist you further.

    Thank you.

    Hello,

We realize the inconvenience you are experiencing with defragmentation on HP Recovery (G) drive. We will certainly help you.

Can you confirm us if the G drive is an SSD or HDD drive?

If its an SSD drive then we would like to inform you that you cannot perform defragmentation on the drive. However if its a HDD drive we suggest you to perform the below step and check if it helps:

Run Chkdsk command and check if it helps:

    What is chkdsk/r/f?

Chkdsk is an in-build system tool in DOS, OS/2 and Windows. It verifies the file system integrity of a volume and fixes logical file system errors.

Disclaimer: While performing chkdsk on the hard drive if any bad sectors are found on the hard drive, while the bad sectors might be recovered however there might be pertinent data loss.

Follow the steps in the given below link:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Check-a-drive-for-errors

Note: Article applies to Windows 10 as well.

Let us know the status of the issue. We will be happy to assist you further.

    Thank You.

Chkdsk not only fixed my defragmentation problem but it also fixed many other problems I was experiencing. Thank you for responding to this problem.

Before running Chkdsk, Win 10 was running incredibly slow- a simple program such as task manager would take 30+ seconds to open and lets not even talk about the boot time (5 - 10 MINUTES). Now everything is running smoothly.

Chkdsk said it didn't find any bad sectors on my disk so I was surprised to find it fixed anything, but whatever it did it totally fixed my machine.

    God bless you Chkdsk.
