Everything is up-to-date ...personal homemade MP4's work in preview...

I have read that DRM videos cannot be copied , but I have downloaded them and copied them ????? to DVD's , my Kindles.....

video graphic driver is up to date...my conversion program been using for yrs / never had problems.

Took some home made AVI's / MOV's / WMV's  and placed them ( added or dragged ) onto MOVIE MAKER , they all work !!. You see the frames advancing and previews are shown...

The MP4's are seen advancing when played , but preview screen is Blk...

When I tried to convert particular MP4's to different formats , then convert but when played back " black "

I can open the MP4's in regular Media Player with No problem to view...as well as burn them to DVD's

The 3 MP4 files came from Tru TV / Youtube / Vimeo...

JUST strange that I can DOWNLOAD them , VIEW them , even Burn them to dvd , BUT cannot View them in WMM to edit !!!!!

    I surrender.. thxs mberger

It's possible that your issue is actually with an out-of-date video graphics driver. Start by running dxdiag and looking at the Display tab. Make a note of the Device manufacturer and the driver date. Then go to the GPU manufacturer's website (e.g. Intel, AMD or NVIDIA) and find a driver update utility.

Alternatively, it could be your conversion program isn't creating 100% compatible files. It may just be repackaging the same codec in a different wrapper. How does Movie Maker work if you pick a standard sample .wmv (not converted) to use in your movie?

tried both WMV & H.264 conversions. of files . Did not work !  Just very strange ;  was able to download the video files. One clip from Tru TV & another from another site.  Files open to view ! Files open in Roxio to burn into DVD's ! Files can be dragged onto my Kindle !   All as an MP4 file.....

When same files are added into Movie Maker , even though it shows to be " running " , preview screen stays black and if saved , playback is also black.....

The .mp4 file can contain video in any of a number of formats (DivX, XviD, H.264, etc.). In your case, it sounds like the video is encoded in a format (using a codec) that doesn't support editing within Movie Maker.

My suggestion would be to convert the file to a codec that is 100% compatible with Movie Maker, such as Windows Media Video (.wmv) or even .mp4 but with a standard codec of H.264.
