The Preview was just updated to OS Build 14393.5 on the test box that’s running Avast Free – and the Defender screen changed from this:

     …to this:

So the PC status line tells us that the glass suddenly went from being “half empty” to being “half full” – but I would definitely characterize the operational state of Windows Defender as being “turned on”, despite the fact that Avast is installed, and that Defender's real-time protection is turned off.

Adding to the comments of  Bruce Hagen,  be advised I successfully used Avast on XP, Vista and Win 7 with the "old" Windows Defender antispyware program….but that was an antispyware program only that did not conflict with Avast.

The Windows Defender antivirus scanner presently being used on Win 10 is a more comprehensive program not intended to be used concurrently with another antivirus program that also provides real time scanning.

See  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/getstarted-protect-your-pc  Note the statement “When you start up Windows 10 for the first time, Windows Defender is on and working to protect your PC by scanning for malicious software. It will turn itself off if you install another antivirus app.”

    Regards…

Where did you read that you could use Defender with another security program installed? Since it does the same job, it is supposed to be shut down by design.

I understand that after the August 2nd Anniversary Update,
Defender will run with another security program installed, but in
      a limited capacity.
