Windows 10 upgrade stuck at 99 percent

I was finally able to download the Windows 10 update on my Asus k43s laptop (running on win 7 sp1) after 2 nights of troubleshooting because of failed download. So all I needed to do was to install it.  Started installing at 8pm (yesterday). Slept through it because I knew it would take long to install. At 6 am this morning, it reached 99 % (getting ready) and on the bottom it says, configuring settings 96%. I went to work expecting it will be done by the time I arrive home. It's been 16 hours now, and it is still stuck at 99 percent. More than 24 hours have passed since I started installing. What do I do next?

I had the same problem upgrading a Mac Pro from Windows 7 to Windows 10.

The Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant got to 90% within 30 minutes, then took a few hours to get to 99%.  Everything else on the computer worked but the status showed 99%.  I waited and waited.  Eventually, while I was sleeping, Windows 10 got to 100% and installed.  I estimate it spent about 14 hours at 99%.

Do This if you are stuck at 99% upgrading from windows 7 to windows 10.

Stopping the "wuauserv" fixed the problem. Within a couple of minutes the upgrade finished downloading and the computer restarted with the upgrade being installed.
