    Hi,

We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you.

    • When exactly do you get this error message?

This problem may be caused by a NetBIOS name conflict between the workstation and either another workstation with the same NetBIOS name, or a workgroup or domain with the same NetBIOS name as the workstation.

Computers must have unique names on the network. To fix the issue, I would have you rename the computer and see if it fixes the issue.

You must be logged on as an administrator to complete these steps.

    1. Right click Start, click Control Panel, click System, and then click Change Settings under Computer name, domain, and workgroup.
    2. Click Change Computer Name, type the new computer name, and then click OK.

If the issue persists, you may stop and restart the computer browser service and check if it helps.

    Here are the steps:

    1. Press Windows Key + R to open the Run prompt.
    2. Type services.msc and hit enter.
    3. Find Computer Browserin the list, right click on it and select the properties.
    4. Click on the Stop button, restart the computer and now restart the service by clicking on Start.

Please take your time and reply with the status. We will be glad to assist you.

I'm getting the same error with Windows 10 (build 10074). The computer name is unique, but I changed it anyway, and restarting the browser service also didn't fix it. It looks to me like it's actually trying to register the computer name on the network as "WORKGROUP      :1d" - which is not the name it has been assigned - and is being refused because it is invalid. These errors have been showing up in the system log every few minutes for quite some time and I believe they are what is keeping the computer from going to sleep; it just keeps waking up again on the same interval. I'm going to disable the browser service for now just to see what happens.

Run into this issue on a regular basis at work but it is a result of running a vpn adapter for work - hamchi or neorouter will both give me the error.  Since I'm on a domain network and I'm running the vpn adapter at the same time I'm connected to the network it will see the server from two different adapters which results in the error.  I'd expect to see the same error on my home network if I had machines connecting with physical and virtual adapters.   May not be your issue but one that you should be aware.

Hi! This is very late but might still help you.

I had same issues. PC woke up from sleep and event viewer showed HOMEGROUP registration error every 5 min + 10 sec. I did 2 things to resolve this.

    1. In Device manager under network adapters I configured my network adapter to not be able to wake pc from sleep (I did the same for all of my USB devices too)
    2. I have a network gateway at home. I entered its settings via internet browser and disabled network file sharing server (which is used for accessing USB storage device connected to the gateway, on the network). This server had the name of "Thompson" and work group "WORKGROUP" which is the same as my PC's work group but PC name is "John". SO I don't really know why it was causing problems.
