How Should I Upgrade My PC For Gaming?

Hi,

I recently installed the Battlefield 1 beta and, after playing a few games, found that my PC was struggling quite severely, even on low settings. My FPS rarely rose above 30 and even dropped as low as 12 during high-intensity periods of the game. I figured that my suspicions of needing to upgrade my PC were indeed correct. However, I'm not exactly sure which parts of my PC I should upgrade first (if some even need upgrading, that is). Here are my PC specs:

CPU: AMD A8-5500 APU 3.20GHz (4 Cores, 12th Generation) with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics

GPU: 4096MB ATI AMD Radeon R9 280X

Motherboard: ASRock FM2A55M-DGS (CPU Socket)

RAM: 8GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 798MHz (9-9-9-24)

Storage:

 - 21.5GB free of 223GB Crucial_ CT240M500SSD1 SATA SSD

 - 911GB free of 1.81TB Western Digital WD External HDD 1021 USB Device (SATA)

Optical Drive: TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-222BB SATA cdrom Device

Sound: Realtek High Definition Audio

OS: Windows 10 Home 64-bit with 1920x1080 HDMI Display

Note: None of these components have been overclocked. I have researched into overclocking, but considering that my PC does begin to radiate a fair bit of heat already, I'm not sure overclocking would be a great idea (feel free to suggest otherwise if I'm mistaken about overclocking). It might be worth mentioning that I haven't given my PC a good air-dusting in probably about a year now, so I don't know whether that could cause issues, although in my previous experiences, I've never really noticed any performance differences after air-dusting my PC.

My budget can be anywhere below or around £500.00 (at the moment).

Thanks in advance.

I'd actually complete all the steps in Windows 10 Install Integrity Checklist including uninstallingthe AV long enough to test thoroughly without it.  Every other AV besides Defender is found to cause issues at one time or another.

Then compare the install you have with the ideal install in Clean Install Windows 10 which has been done by over 100,000 without a single complaint or reported issue.  If this is a Factory or Upgrade install then that is an inferior install that no tech enthusiast would ever run in the first place.  I'd up the game from worst to best.

Then I'd test my hardware to be sure following RAM - Test with Memtest86+

and using the manufacturer's bootable HD Diagnostic extended CD scan, followed by a full Disk Check

    Hi,

Thank you for replying. I had a look through the checklist and I believe (key word) that my version of Windows 10 is set up correctly. I use Bitdefender anti-virus Free Edition as my real-time AV solution because it is very light on system resources and, as far as I know, doesn't contain any tricky add-ons or other unwanted features which could slow a computer down.

However, whilst we're on the topic of system repairs, do you know of any other tool or Windows feature which can scan your entire system for corrupt or damaged files and/or hardware? I have already run the sfc /scannowcommand that you suggested but no issues were found. However, I do feel like there could be something not quite right somewhere in my system because every now and then, something in my PC does seem to 'glitch out' in the sense that some core file goes haywire, resulting in many programs not starting. In order to get my PC to work again, I have to do a system restore. As I said, this doesn't happen often but I feel it could be partly responsible for my PC's struggle to run newer games, as it did seem like an issue related to the GPU drivers or something.

    Thanks again for replying.

    Hi,

Thanks for replying. I tried your three suggested methods but sadly, they weren't able to improve the performance of my PC. For method 1, I ran the troubleshooter and the only issue it could find was that some troubleshooting history files were taking up 0.057MB of disc space - which is extremely unlikely to be causing any issues.

For method 2, my display adapter drivers were already up to date.

For method 3, my version of Windows 10 was also already up to date.

Again, thanks for taking your time to help me. If you have any other suggestions please let me know.

In addition further go over your install with the Windows 10 Install Integrity Checklist to check it's set up correctly, optimized for best performance, and any needed repairs are done.
