Split from this thread.

Yes windows 7 stuck on checking for updates.

No solution from reading all I could find on this topic.

Always run as administrator and open command prompt.

Spending all my time up trying to sort it, as is a new dell 11.6 inch.

Reason I mention that because have same problem with Acer 10 inch. about 7 year old. Been formatting to sort problems out, this being one and noticed something this last time I did it. That being while SP1 not installed was ok, and would function correctly Check for updates and within a minute or so how it should function leaving you with a nice  Tick and says No updates available. Install SP1 and thas it finished. Then soon as you tap on windows update to look, all I see is the same, that being a nasty X cross saying check for updates. Take SP1 out and will function normally.

    Please be more positive.

A lot of problems arise from setting Windows Update to automatically update. Select Start, All Programs, Windows Update, Change Settings. Under Important Updates is a box showing the current setting. Click on the Arrow down to the right and change the selection to “Never check for updates”. Click on OK and restart your computer.

For a Windows 7 32 bit computer download and install:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=9be3154c-bcd5-4391-a121-c96a1aaa71e2

For a Windows 7 64 bit computer download and install:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=bda43604-eff9-4539-afab-556eeb7e6b78

Select Start, All Programs, Windows Update, Change Settings. Under Important Updates is a box showing the current setting. Click on the Arrow down to the right and change the selection to “Check for Updates but let me choose whether to download and install them”. Restart your computer.

Current as of 1 August 2016

    July 2016 update rollup for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

I can't get passed this part.  I clicked on the win-7 64 bit KB3020369 link, but all it does is start checking for updates.... and gets stuck there again.
