No Audio After Sleep (Realtek HD Audio)

Basic Information

  • Computer: Lenovo ThinkPad X240
  • Operating System: Windows 8.1 Pro (all updates installed)
  • Audio: Realtek ALC3232
  • Audio Drivers: Realtek R2.75 (latest on Windows Update and Lenovo)
  • Default Audio/Communication Device: Realtek 2nd Output (whenever it is inputted - else, it defaults to Speakers).

Problem:

  • When the computer is first turned on, everything is working normally.  When there are no headphones in, audio is outputted through "Speakers/HP".  When there are headphones plugged in, audio switches to "Realtek 2nd Output" as expected and sound comes through headphones.
  • However, after the computer is put into sleep mode and then resumed, this is when problems begin.  Realtek 2nd Output no longer outputs to the headphones and Realtek drivers no longer switch from Realtek 2nd Output to Speakers when headphones are plugged in.  Audio only works through the "Speakers/HP", whether it is headphones or speakers.
  • Despite this, I can tell that the computer is still detecting whether the headphone is plugged in because in the Realtek HD Audio Manager, it shows whether the audio jack is plugged in or not, but it shows it being connected as "Speakers/HP".
  • Everything fixes itself when the computer is restarted (until the next sleep).

Attempted and Failed Solutions

  • Driver rollback
  • System Restore
  • Reverting back to earlier imaged backup of Windows (4 months prior) when the problem did not exist.

I decided to delve deeper into the Registry, and I found where the Realtek settings were.  I noticed something interesting that was going on, and decided to do a before and after.  Before is when everything was working properly and After is when problems begin to occur.  It seems that Realtek is detecting a new "Pin" (Pin16) as another headphone jack after resuming from sleep.

Before:

After:

**Note:**When I was doing all of my system updates, I did do a BIOS update that was provided from Lenovo's System Update application.  I really hope that the BIOS isn't the reason that the computer is detecting different jacks after a suspend state.

For me, the problem appears when my notebook enters sleep mode with the headphones plugged in.

Workaround: remove the headphones, enter sleep mode and wake up.

After this, the headphones work again.

My notebook is Lenovo L430 with Realtek ALC3232 audio (and Windows 7 Pro x64).

    Christopher,

Good luck; I had to return two HP "x2-k010nr" and an "acer transformer for the same reason. These were brand new machines. In my case the external audio combo jack stopped listening to the external mic, however, the playback audio was fine. Also sometimes the 8.1 os would only listen to the internal mic used for Skype. Conflict of interet? The blame games goes on between Microsoft and their vendors!!

Ham123 ps: hope MS and vendors go bankrupt!!

    5. Select a number of minutes you want both the display and the computer sleep mode, and then click "Create."

If issue still didn’t get resolved try method 3

Method 3: Update Sound card Driver software from the Manufacturer’s website

Go to the computer manufacturer’s website and search for the windows 8.1 compatible drivers for the sound card and install them on the computer

Exact same issue, and probably started after BIOS update.  Did your red led stop flashing while in sleep mode?  Did you manage to resolve it?
