What is the Unity Web Player?

I'm running a Dell laptop with Win 7 SP1.

I noticed something called the "Unity Web Player" in CTL PANEL > PROGRAMS & FEATURES.  I was able to find such a thing in C:/ under APP DATA (hidden) > LOCALLOW > UNITY.  As I showed, I could only find the program when I changed the folder options to show hidden files.

According to the website (http://unity3d.com/webplayer/), it allows my computer to play 3D content on the web.

Frankly, I don't know if I need this . . . or, if it is just "junkware" that was pre-installed by Dell when I got the computer.

Does anyone know what this thing is?  And, whether it can be safely uninstalled?

Thanks.

Hi Matthew,

If you do not need/use the functions of the Unity web player as mentioned in the Unity website, you may safely uninstall the program. It mostly came pre-installed with your Dell laptop.

Additionally, you may post your question in the official Unity Community.

Member of the unity community here. I realize this thread has been dead for years, but I'd like to chip in for posterity.

The WebPlayer is a way for a Unity game to run in the browser. While the Unity game engine normally can do anything the .NET API can, the WebPlayer is largely sandboxed and does not have access to the filesystem. http://docs.unity3d.com/Manual/SecuritySandbox.html

It can be deleted, and if you ever visit a site to play a Unity game, I expect it will prompt you to install it again.

Do you know what games use it specifically? I don't know what game is using it but I have currently uninstalled alot of my 3D games and wondered if iot came from one of them ... Possibly Second Life with the Pheonix viewer or maybe Saints Row 3??

yeah, because asking if a program is safe on their own forums is going to get you a straight answer
