OK, I have had a few more pix and videos that wouldn't open since I last wrote because "not supported by the version of Photo Gallery that I have." This even though it tells me that no updates are available, "you have the latest version." Most of the things open on our new computers at work, however, so I have not been trying to figure out further why I can't do this at home. It would be nice if there were a reliable fix for this that could be installed or whatever, but I am reluctant to experiment with products provided by third parties. If MS itself came out with something I would try it.
How do I get the latest updates to the photo gallery. This is the answer I get when I need to open something up. Also having problems with photos after cropping or fixing them it will not save.
Photo gallery can't open this picture. This file format is not supported or you don't have the latest updates to Photo Gallery.

2009-11-25T20:09:52+00:00 Hi Sudaumoon,
Welcome to Microsoft Answers.
• Where you able to open these pictures before?
• When did it stop working?
Photo Gallery will show pictures with any of these file types:
BMP, JPEG, JFIF, TIFF, PNG, WDP
If Windows Movie Maker is installed, Photo Gallery will also play videos in these file types:
ASF, AVI, MPEG, WMV
Occasionally, when you start Photo Gallery, you might see a message that new updates are available. Usually, these updates enable you to view and edit additional kinds of pictures or videos.
However, try these:
- Click Start->Control Panel > Folder Options > View > Show hidden files and folders
- Navigate to: [driveletter]:\Users[user]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Photo Gallery
- Delete all contents (or back up if you wish)
- Start Windows Photo Gallery
