The settings in my Lumia 950XL include backups and take me onedrive so I can delete backups.  However I find no information on how to restore a backup.  Can someone explain this?  Thanks.

Bill

    Hi Bill,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

You have to reset your phone to factory settings, and then sign in with the same Microsoft Account you used to back up your data.

I really agree. It is SO DISAPPOINTING that there is no option to select your backup and which one you want to restore, rather than resetting your phone from scratch... this doesn't just seem so smart from Microsoft. These type of issue should really be resolved quickly.

    • Go to Settings > Update and Security > Backup > More Options > Backup Now.

Yes. That is actually the only option available in Backup > More Options.

One option. (apart from deciding whether "the weather channel" should be included in my backup)

In fact, the text reads "Back up content from participating apps" the list is very short and does not seem to explicitly reference a text message or contacts or device settings backup functionality.

    Embarrassing isn't it?

Furthermore there is a line or two of text at the bottom of that window. It reads....

"Remove backups. Go online to see all your backups and remove the ones you don't need."

This would imply that when I follow the link and sign into my OneDrive account that there is actually more than one backup that I can check and/or delete.

Sadly, there exists only one. It is the latest backup. There are no others.

My point exactly. No wonder the Windows Phone has such a small market share…

I recently moved from a Lumia 640XL under 8.1 Mobile to a 950XL under 10 Mobile. Even though I had taken the precaution of doing a backup of my phone – through WiFi –  before turning it off, upon restore to the new phone I had lost the latest 3 months of message and phone call history.

There really *should* be an app that allows users to _manage_ the backup contents and restore what they select, rather than a one-shot all-or-nothing built-in feature.

Please pass this request on to whoever is in a position to DO something about it. Thank you.

In the Windows Store for mobile I found an App called "Transfer My Data" from Microsoft that allows you to transfer both Contacts and Text Messages from your prior phone over Bluetooth. Unfortunately it does not also transfer phone call history, but the text message transfer worked well for me.
