SMS Notification sound not working on Lumia 950

Handset: Microsoft Lumia 950

Software: Windows Phone 10

OS build: 10.0.10586.29

A few days ago I noticed I began to miss text (sms messages) because I could not hear the notification sound.

I checked my settings and everything is switched on to hear a notification for text messages, so its not my settings,  I did a soft reset, but still not working, I put it to default tone for sms messages.

The odd thing is the notification sound will work when my screen is unlocked and active.

I checked windows central forums and a lot of people are having the same issue, so it must be a bug with windows phone 10.

Has anyone else got this issue and if so how did you fix it?

Also has anyone ever been able to set a custom sms tone for different contacts, because I have never been able to do this on windows phone 10?

Here's the hidden mystery setting area:

    1.  Settings

    2.  type in "background apps"

    3.  toggle "on" for all apps that need to behave, such as "messaging"

Worked for me when this occurred following a phone update and persisted following a subsequent phone update and despite trying every solution out there on the internet.  This solution seen on other sites and sharing here since it seems to help.

Note to Microsoft:  do not remove phone settings when updating the phones, thanks

    Your background apps is disabled.

Go to Settings>System>Battery>Battery usage by app. Press on 'messaging' and enable 'Always allowed in background'

    Hey Joey,

In reality, I'm guessing what actually happened with the Windows Device Recovery Tool and then subsequent update to 10586.29 was this setting stayed enabled (maybe it inadvertently got disabled before?): Settings > Notifications & actions > Show notifications on the lock screen. If you turn that setting off you will indeed not see or hear notifications when the phone is locked.

Magic. For reasons better known to itself, my messaging tab was in the off position?

    Thanks for that,
