Device Failed to Connect

For some reason my camera has stopped showing up in Windows Explorer when I connect USB, and I am unable to access my pictures stored on memory card. All that happens is audio beep "device failed to connect".

What can I do?

  • I have already tried deleting and reinstalling Universal Serial Bus controllers and the problem did not go away.
  • I have also tried an ordinary pen drive connected to the same port, and that works alright - but for some reason, the computer no longer shows a connected camera.

Is there a fixit or something similar that is available?

    Hi Douglas,

Since other device works on the same USB port, it could be possible that the issue lies on the camera itself. To isolate the possible cause of the issue, can you try plugging the camera to a different PC and see if it would work?

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for following up on this, Douglas. can you tell us if you have already checked if there are available drivers for updates on your PC, as I've described on my last post? Please advise.

We'll keep an eye out for your response.

Well, from what I can recollect, I witnessed this problem with connecting Smartphone about November 2015. Eventually, I connected the Smartphone via Wi-Fi link and then promptly forgot about the problem until this month.

What I can recollect, the computer was exceptionally unstable between Autumn 2015 to Summer 2016. I remember having to use repair disk a number of times, to recover from boot failures.

Then, from March 2016, the Windows Update service had stopped, so I used services.msc and computer management to switch off ('enable') several policies and configurations to do with Update, error reporting, customer experience and usb.

To be more specific, I'd changed sometime last spring, the following:

    Games UpdateCheck

    MobilePC

    ScheduleDefrag

    DiskDiagnosis

    MobilityManager

    gwx

    Gadget Manager

    SvcRestartTask

    Disable Reminders

    Set Windows File Protections

Hide the file scan progress window

Maximum Retries to unload and update user profile

Set roaming profile path for all users logging onto this computer

    Only allow local user profile

Do not forcefully unload the users registry at user logoff

    windows boot performance

    scripted diagnostics

    configure scheduled maintenance behaviour

    Configure MSI

    Configure Scenario Execution Level

    disk diagnostic

    configure corrupted file recovery

    application compatibility

    shutdown options

    remote assistance

    kerberos

    automatic root certificate update

    trusted platform module services

    microsoft support diagnostic tool

Suppose these changes were not prior to issue on cameraphone, however they were prior to issue on camera failed to connect.

Thanks for following up, Douglas. Just to verify, did you make any changes on your PC such as system update, upgrade, or anti-virus software update prior to the issue? Please advise so we could determine the probable cause of the issue.

In the mean time, try to check if there's any updates for the driver for all your hardware devices. Thanks Mark,

"Other device" is a  pen drive or memory stick, when I quoted device. Looks like I hadn't mentioned in the original question, but I could also mention that my camera phone also fails to connect to the same computer.

Anyway, I found another Windows PC and I was able to connect to it my camera, via the USB lead.

So I think this shows that the camera itself is not the issue, if that is any help.
