Second SIM slot on Lumia 950/XL supports only 2G service

Split from this thread.

Hi,

I am concerned.

My carrier TELUS in Canada does not support 2G networks, they have HSPA networks and up. This means my 2nd SIM slot is useless.

Is there a way to change SIM 2 on Lumia 950 XL to 3G? Please note I expect to use data from SIM 1 which shows LTE and make calls with SIM 2 card as secondary number

Both SIM slots of the Lumia 950XL supports 2G, 3G, and 4G/LTE.

That is correct, however it seems that both slots CANNOT support 2G, 3G and 4G/LTE AT THE SAME TIME. If you select one for data connectivity, the other one gets automatically restricted to 2G only

According to their own tech department the second (sim 2) slot is limited to 2G. The issue does in fact exist.

Nowhere in Microsoft’s advertising is this mentioned, which would open-up a false advertising case.

I do not own a Nokia 950 (XL) Dual SIM myself. Therefore, I cannot double-check. However, we have seen several reports by now, that the second SIM slot is able to do only 2G (GSM). Microsoft does not leverage Microsoft Answers as feedback channel. Therefore, if GSM gets disabled in Namibia in 2017 already, please, contact the local subsidiary of Microsoft Mobile in Nambia, to communicate this issue with the Nokia 950 (XL) Dual SIM with the customers in a better way: Microsoft » Microsoft Mobile » Nambia » Support (scroll down to ‘Contact us’).

This whole Microsoft Lumia situation getting ridiculous. I have the 950XL dual SIM, and have been going rounds for months with MS and TMO over the lack of WiFi calling which renders my phone useless at work where I get no reception, and TMO finally agreed to provide a 3G/4G/LTE cell-spot which works as advertised after much difficulty setting it up, but doesn't support 2G. So now, while this $650 "flagship" phone is no longer totally useless, I'm still unable to utilize the dual-SIM functionality.

In response to previous replies. NA means North America as in USA and Canada. 2G is near extinct supported by emergency only. 94tid is correct on restriction to 2G on Sim2 if Sim1 is 4G which is what everyone will do with Sim1. I am an avid supporter and generally early adopter of MS products. You can find other products outside MS that are dual Sim that support true dual Sim and not restricted on second Sim. It is confusing why MS went in this direction.

I'm wondering if this issue is hardware or software. If software, then my 950XL may have potential to serve my personal and business needs sometime in the future assuming MS gets to the topic at some point. If hardware, then hope is probably futile and I will keep my eye out for other options. Perhaps the new Sony Biz is the answer.
