Wireless disconnects when laptop lid is closed

Hello,

I purchased a Toshiba Satellite S55t-A5238 earlier this week. It has Windows 8.

Unfortunately, when I close the laptop lid, the wireless internet connection disconnects.

I tried the following:

  • I made sure to go to the Realtek Wireless Network Adaptor in Device Manager and unchecked the  "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".
  • I also went to the Power Options and set it so it does Nothing when the lid is closed.
  • In Advanced Power Settings, I changed the Wireless Adaptor Settings' Power Saving Mode to Maximum Performance.
  • I updated the wireless network adaptor driver and that did not help. I also removed it and put back an older driver which did not help either.
  • I removed the Toshiba Eco power management program that came with the computer.

I restarted the computer several times and I still have this problem. My family's other laptops with Windows 7 do not do this. Now, I have to leave the laptop lid open when I am downloading something that will take awhile because the wifi shuts off after a few moments when I close the lid.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a way to fix this? I'm not sure if this is a Toshiba problem or Windows 8 problem. I'm tempted to return the laptop since this is very inconvenient.

Thanks.

Do the changes as above,  unplug power before you close the lid and plug it back in when the lid is closed. Worked for me.

Actually, MY wifi will only shut off when closing lid if hooked to my smart tv.  When I am connected to my other lcd flat screen which is NOT a "smart tv", it works properly.  I am really scratching my head with this one.

I have not found a solution to this, which in my case began with a new modem, but I have begun employing a sort of work-around, specifically setting the options so that closing the lid does nothing, and logging off before closing it.  With these settings and actions, my screen turns off when the lid is closed, and comes up a fraction of a second after it is opened again, and it has always been connected by WiFi when I have logged in.

Sorry for commenting on such and old thread, but this happened last night with my Lenovo laptop. I think that my solution or theory applies to your PC too. You see, the body of my laptop is made out of magnesium, a metal. Your laptop's body is made out of aluminum, also a metal. When speaking about radio waves and WiFi, metal is known to reflect radio waves and doesn't really let them pass through like plastic does.

So what I think is happening is that you're basically encasing your wireless network card in a reflective material that doesn't let the radio waves pass through, neither in nor out.

When I remembered that my laptop was made out of magnesium I opened the lid and everything worked.

Actually, I was concerned about when I use an HDMI cord to my TV.  When hooking up to my NON smart TV I can close my lid on my laptop and keep my internet streaming fine.  On the other hand however, when I hook up to my smart TV and close my lid, I quickly loose my internet connection.  This leaves me scratching my head.

Try switching your router to channel 6. Not sure if it will fix it but I started having issues when I switched routers, was fine on my old one. I switched back to my old one and it is fine now. I cant tell you what channel the other one was using as I reset it before I realised
