how to change the default from Paint to Corel PhotoPaintwhen PhotoPaint is not one of the options?

When I need to work on a photo in PhotoPaint , I change it to a .bmp file in CorelDraw and click on "edit bitmap". It then goes into PhotoPaint for editing - however. the PhotoPaint option in default programs has somehow gotten changed to "Paint" and although I have tried to change it back to PhotoPaint, that is not one of the options given and does not show up in any list. If I dig down far enough to find PhotoPaint, Windows will not allow it to become the ,bmp default program and I can't continue my project.

How can I get the default program back to PhotoPaint for .bmp files?

I meant that you should right-click on a *.bmp file (which you find using Windows Explorer), not right-click on it after you have already opened it with PhotoPaint.

Whether you go to Default Programs > Associate a file type or protocol with a specific program > Change program

or right-click on a *.bmp file and select Open with, you end up at the same place -- the "Open with" dialog.

In the "Open with" dialog, you click the "Browse" button and then start exploring in Corel Suite 13 > Photo Paint.

At this point, you need to determine which of the files is PhotoPaint itself.  I don't have PhotoPaint installed, so I can't tell you the exact name of the file to look for (it's probably "Corel PhotoPaint.exe"), but here's one way to find out.

If you have a shortcut on your Desktop to start PhotoPaint, right-click that shortcut and select "Properties."  If you don't have a shortcut on your Desktop, click the Start Orb, scroll until you find Corel PhotoPaint, right-click on it and select "Properties."

The "Shortcut" tab should already be selected (if it's not, select it).

Look at the "Target" and if necessary, use the mouse or the right arrow key to make sure that you're looking at the right end of the line.  The program after the last \ character is the file you need to look for and "Open" when you're browsing in Program files.

Here's an example for Corel PaintShop Pro X8, which in this example is in

   C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\Corel PaintShop Pro X8

After rt clicking on the shortcut to find the whole address, I

copied and pasted the address in the field after clicking "Browser" and got a message " windows can't find" it . Then put it in in pieces hitting "open" after each one.

    C:/Program Files (x86)CorelCorelDRAW Graphics Suite 13ProgramsCorelPhotoPaint

At the end of the address, hitting open took me back to the original options box with no change in the offering of options. Is this a windows problem or a Corel problem?

Let's try another way, given that you used to be able to open *.bmp files with PhotoPaint.

Get to the "Open with" window.

From what you wrote in your original question, I assume that PhotoPaint is not included in the list of "Recommended Programs."  At the bottom of the list, click the down arrow to the right of "Other programs."

This will show another list of programs that hopefully will include PhotoPaint.  If PhotoPaint is in that list, select it, make sure the box to "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is checked, and click OK.

If PhotoPaint is not in the list of "Other Programs" I'll try again to explain how to use the "Browse" button.

When you rt click on a bitmap in CorelDraw it gives you options  like " convert to bitmap, edit bitmap, trace bitmap," etc, so doing it that way is moot.

When I go to "default programs" highlight  .bmp and go to "change program" , go to bottom "browse".

at C:\Program Files(x86) I then have to find Corel suite 13>PhotoPaint>click "open" only to find a list of what is in PhotoPaint, none of which is helpful. The sub catagories can't be avoided so that just PhotoPaint can be accessed as a program or application.

There are no error messages, there is just no way that I can figure out how to get PhotoPaint back as the application .bmp files go to.

What happens when you "dig down far enough to find PhotoPaint"?

    That is, you

    • right-click on a *.bmp file
    • select Open with
    • select "Choose default programs"
    • click the "Browse" button
    • browse in C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files (x86) until you locate PhotoPaint.exe
    • select it and click Open

    Then what happens?

If you get an error message, please provide the complete text.
