The nar file also allows you to store "smart sequences", wich is a reproduction of few jpg files as a kind of one gif file

What is a nar file and how do I open a nar file?

.NAR files are Camera RAW files created by Nokia Smart Cam app on Nokia device, for example Lumia 520. It is also a zipped container file that hold multiple .jpg files and an .xml meta data file.

    How to Open .NAR file

Open and edit NAR file with Nokia Smart Cam app in Windows Phone. And if you only want to extract the JPGs inside NAR file, you can just rename it as a .ZIP file and extract it with unzip tools.

Really? So I'll suppose that it's for viewing on Windows Phone only then?

If only Microsoft supported their own file types "natively" at least across Windows 10!

For me to manually open hundreds of files using a ZIP utility is not an option.

    Hello,

There are at least two reasons to store the additional original files:

    • To allow you to adjust the image brightness range after the image has been taken. You can do this when you browse the pictures on your phone.
    • To allow you to do some custom post processing on your personal computer afterward. This also why you have the ability to store the raw image files.

Generally speaking, the lumia 9xx and 10xx phones are "camera phones" e.g. their camera is a good one. That's actually why I bought it in the first place. The windows camera app also give you DSLR-like shooting options. So while it is not the quality of a DSLR (sensor size, lens, etc.) it is still interesting to have the original pictures and the raw data if needed.

The best camera is the one you have when you need it... And I always have my phone with me. ;-)

Indeed the 950 is an excellent camera phone, but the challenge remains when you download the photos on any external drive. The .nar files do not open. Microsoft Store is also not providing an app to support these files, which have moving images......a big disappointment......

Those *.nar files are actually zip files, in which you can find three photos(light, normal, dark exposure) and a few info files.

You should be able to open these files with any program that can handle zip files (winzip, 7z etc etc)
