Why Microsoft is opening every link in a new window

Can someone please tell me why does edge opens its every link in a new window
I am so fed up of asking , and no one is replying

Google chrome and firefox doesn't suit me
On top of that the community keeps saying use edge use edge
I want to and i would love to
But please fix this bug pleeaaaasseeee..

For better understanding the issue, I want to confirm with you:

Are you experiencing the issue when you press Alt+Tab?

In my case, if Edge opens two tabs in a window, it will show only one instance of Edge in taskbar. Then when I press Alt+Tab, the two tabs will show on the UI of switching windows.

Are you describing the same behavior as the above?

Exactly the same, When you are in Edge you wont know about the new window created ;
The experience will be very smooth

But when i want to go to the other application (Alt + Tab) , I suprisingly see many edge windows are opened for every tab i opened in the browser.

I think you're referring to the Alt-Tab behaviour that shows open windows and some Edge tabs as if they were windows. You can configure this behaviour at Windows settings ⚙ > System > Multi-tasking > Alt-Tab.

If you want to hide the behavior of Windows of showing each of your Edge tabs as a separate window (only) while in Alt+Tab mode then that is a Windows setting. This feature was added so that users can quickly get to specific tabs rather than going to the main window and then going from there but note that there is still only a single window for the app.

To change this setting Firedog is talking about the Windows System so in Windows go to the search and type Settings to get to the Settings app. Then search for the Multitasking settings which were added in newer Windows updates. Under there go to the Alt+Tab section. Within that dropdown are options to show windows only or Windows + some of the Edge tabs. Choose your option but remember that there is still only a single Edge window, this is just a tab switching optimization for Edge.

I don't quite follow what you mean by every link but whether clicking a link opens a new tab/window or uses the existing window is determined by the site, not the browser. If you look at the underlying HTML on the anchor <a> element there is a target attribute. If it is set to _blank then all browsers will open a new tab/window. If it is not set then the browser should default to replacing the existing window. As an example, if you go here then each link should open in the same window. If it doesn't then look at the underlying HTML.

If you have an example site that is demoing this problem then please provide the URL so we can see the behavior. I don't see this issue myself so I wonder if there is a bizarre setting somewhere that is causing it. Note that all browsers should behave the same so if you are having an issue in Edge then try a different browser and report if you see a difference in behavior. This would lead toward a settings issue.

Thank you @Michael Taylor the link which you gave opened in the same window
So far So good.

But when the link is opened via ctrl , meaning in a new tab..
The common behavior is that new tab opens in the same window

But in my case new tab creates a new window.
For example your link without ctrl was fine
But what if i wanted it in the new window
I will have to press ctrl..
So now commonly 1 Edge window with 2 tabs (existing and just opened) are expected
In my case 2 Edge windows are opened of each 2 tabs
for the third new tab 3 edge windows are opened of each 3 tabs

I see. So if you hold the Ctrl key and click a link it opens in a new window and you expect it to open in a new tab. Interestingly on a new Win 10 machine with the latest update when I do that it opens in the same window but a different tab.

It's by design in Edge. I think it can help us to select the tabs more quickly.

We can't change it by our owns. If you don't like it, you can provide your feedback about this feature by pressing Alt+Shift+I in Edge. The Edge team will collect the user voice and improve the product continuously.

I want to use Edge But i am not able to :::((((

Please, Tell me some way to get it to original edge even if i had to downgrade the edge i'll.
Because it is very frustating of have having 8 tabs , generating 8 edge windows because i can't switch to other applications

I want to have only one instance of edge though i have 20 tabs open in the edge..

Can you please guide me through..
Please dont say me to use google chrome
It doesn't suit me , I want my edge setting back...........................

You don't have access to Edge Legacy if you have installed April’s Windows 10 Update Tuesday release. For more information, you can refer to this article.
So please provide the feedback about this to Edge team. I understand you desired to change this feature, but providing feedback is the only thing we can do now.

I don't think you are fully right.
At least for search results in Bing the behavior has to do with Safe Search settings, see here:
