AppData Takes up 70GB - how to free up the space?

Hi

I have been prompted that the hard disk for my Surface Pro 3 (on Windows 8.1) has run out of space, which is a huge surprise to me as I have a 128GB HDD and don't use up much of the space. After many rounds of searching, I finally found the culprit. It's the AppData folder. It initially took up 56GB of space. And now, it's taking 70GB of space! How do I free up AppData space? I don't even run much Windows Apps on my Surface Pro 3

There is a good free 3rd party app called treesize (from Jam software) that will tell you what is using the space.  Once you download and run it make a snip of the app data folder and we can tell you what is safe to delete

Have you run a disk cleanup wizard including system files?

Thanks for replying and sorry about my late reply. I've managed to locate one of the "culprits" that had been taking the space on my laptop, i.e. backup for my iPhone and iPad. But I've also located another major source that's eating up a lot of space on my laptop, it's this Temp folder found in C Drive: AppData>Local. Attached is a screen grab of the folder. The file size is an astonishing 20.7GB. Can you advise if I am able to delete the content in this temp folder?

    Hi Emmylou

Thanks for the tip. I'd cleaned up all there is to be cleaned up on my laptop and this "Temp" folder in  C Drive: AppData>Local is the biggest culprit now with 20.7GB. I would like advice if there are any dire consequences if I were to remove all the data in this temp folder. Thanks.

Deleting the contents of the temp folder shouldn't cause any problems. Cleaning the folder is something best done during boot.

    Regards.
