your answer is not helpful. I also want to turn off update of defender because I am using trend micro antivirus software.

It automatically shuts off defender since it has its own controls but the update feature for defender does not shut off and causes other update install problems like windows not updating due to defender update fail.

It is not recommended that you do that but this should answer your question if you are sure that's what you want to do:  http://www.tenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/9137-disable-downloading-all-windows-defender-updates.html

...the update feature for defender does not shut off and causes other update install problems like windows not updating due to defender update fail.

D'ya think the fact that Windows Updates & Defender Definitions updates failing to install might be related?

Your problems have nothing whatsoever to do with the fact that you can't "shut off" Defender updates.

I know that it is not recommended to keep off auto update but due to my company policies i have to do that. The problem is that my laptop has win10 home edition and all those instructions can not be applied in may case. If u have any other instructions pls let me know.

    thx
