Applications Taking Sound Priority

I've been having this problem since I purchased my laptop last year.

Whenever I run multiple applications that use sound at the same time, the one that was initially playing sound takes sound priority while the others appear to be reduced in sound.

For instance, I run Netflix via Chrome and have a game client open at the same time. If I play the Netflix prior to opening the game, the sound level will be normal. When the sound stops, such as going to the next episode/pausing, and is resumed, the sound will be reduced. Since I don't use volume for the game I play, I assume the game takes sound priority and Netflix sound is reduced.

If I want to have the sound restored in Netflix, I have to end up closing the game. Right when the game is closed, the sound is restored on Netflix.

This happens to every program that uses sound, whether it be Spotify, iTunes, Media Player, Steam, Websites with Sound, etc.

I suspect it has something to do with my Dolby Home Theater V4 audio equalizer thing that comes with my laptop. It seems that the program with "priority" is under the effect of the equalizer. Anything that plays without the "priority" isn't affected by the equalizer. However, the Dolby thing doesn't change anything.

I have already went under Playback Devices>Communications and selected Do nothing under the reduced sound options for phone calls, which did nothing.

I also went to my Speaker Properties>Advanced and turned off Exclusive Mode which seemed to be what was happening to my audio, but that also did nothing.

I'm still running Windows 8.1, which I've considered switching to 10; however I do not feel like doing it yet. This also took place prior to upgrading from 8 to 8.1

I have no other approaches to solving this issue so any suggestions would be great!

    I had this same issue and I think I have found the setting that caused it:

    Go to: Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound

    Then click on your speakers and press properties, click on the enhancements tab and check the box 'Disable all sound effects'.

    Also go to the Advanced tab and uncheck the box that allows applications to take exclusive control of the device.

    This seems to have fixed the problem for me, from now on you will have to manually set the volume of applications etc. which is what I wanted.

    I installed a new audio driver from the Acer website after removing my current. With this came a new change to the Dolby Home Theater equalizer.

    Unfortunately the problem is still occurring. I appreciate the help, but I don't think this is fixable. I'll just stick with closing programs to fix sound since it's not that bad.

    EDIT: Also it appears that the Volume Icon has disappeared. When trying to enable it, it is grayed out.

    Try to download or update the sound drivers from the link mentioned below and see if it helps you to fix the issue.

    1. There is no error code. It is just the sound that is really affected.
    2. I have had no major hardware/software upgrades that made any difference.
    3. My laptop is an Acer Aspire V3-772G-9822

    Method 1. There is no problems with the audio

    Method 2. There is still no change in the problem unfortunately

    If you have any other suggestions, I would appreciate it.

    From the issue descriptions, it seems that there is an issue with sound on your system as it reduces on some application and remains normal in some others.

    I can imagine the inconvenience you have experienced. I will help you in fixing the issue.

    To help you to resolve the issue, I would appreciate if you could answer the following question:

    1. Do you receive any error code or message?
    2. Have you made any recent hardware or software changes to your computer prior to the issue?
    3. What is the make and model number of your laptop?

    Let’s run the audio troubleshooter and make internal speaker as the default device by following the steps in the below methods and check the issue. The issue could also be related to the device drivers.

    Method 1:

    If your computer is having problems playing sound, try using the Playing Audio troubleshooter to fix the problem. It checks for common problems with your volume settings, your sound card or driver, and your speakers or headphones.

    Method 2:


    Step 1:

    a. Click Start, type Sound in the Start Search box.

    b. Click Sound in the search results at the top of the Start menu.

    c. Click the Playback tab. Notice the check mark next to the default device. For most users, the default device is Internal Speakers. Make sure that your audio settings are configured as expected.

    Step 2:

    Follow these steps:

    a. Click Start, type Sound in the Start Search box.

    b. Click Sound in the search results at the top of the Start menu.

    c. On the Playback tab,

    d. Select the playback device.

    e. Click Properties, click the Advanced tab and make sure that the Default Format is set to the value that you expect.

    f. When you finish, close this window to return to the previous window.

    Let’s check the configuration settings.

    a. On the Playback tab.

    b. Select the playback device.

    c. Click Configure and then make sure the configurations are set correctly.

    If the sound settings are set correct, and your internal speakers are already set as the default device.

    Select the sound device that you want as the default sound device, and then click Set Default.

    Click OK to save your settings and to close the Sound dialog box.
