Using Windows7: Windows Live Email. POP settings

I was having trouble with my WLM at home after traveling and using my account on Hotel servers.  I called Comcast (my server) and got some things changed:

  • Both incoming and outgoing port settings for POP
  • She added an IMAP program and synced it to my email.

This morning I got some email but couldn't send anything out.  I tried looking at the settings and changed them to what I remembered from the Comcast help desk.  I also changed my password.

Now I get error messages that the server doesn't recognize my email address.

I think I must have royally messed up.  But when I called for help today I was told that Windows Live Mail is no longer being supported.  Is that the case?

I'd prefer to continue with my POP account if possible altho it seems to be only IMAP trying to open now.

This is the error message I received:

Unable to send or receive messages for the Comcast (8mjc35) account. Header download for the 'Inbox' folder did not complete. Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity.

Server Response: Your IMAP command could not be sent to the server, due to non-network errors. This could, for example, indicate a lack of memory on your system.

Server: 'imap.comcast.net'

Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC0F

Protocol: IMAP

Port: 993

Secure(SSL): Yes

(BY THE WAY:  I have lots of computer memory).

Since I'm not getting emails in, do I just leave this window open until someone (hopefully?) responds?  Help!

Why are you using Port 25? I will post what the link offered.

To prevent spam and to ensure the security of our network and customers, Comcast no longer supports the use of port 25 for sending email.

IMAP Email Configuration Settings

To configure an email client to use Comcast email (@comcast.net), the following settings should be used for sending and receiving email:

  • Incoming Mail Server Name: imap.comcast.net
  • Incoming Mail Server Port Number:
    • Recommended: 993 with SSL ON
    • Only if Needed: 143 with SSL ON
  • Outgoing Mail Server Name: smtp.comcast.net
  • Outgoing Mail Server Port Number:
    • Recommended: 587 (SMTP)
    • Only if Needed: 465 (SMTPS)
  • SSL Encryption: checked
  • Authentication: XFINITY username and password required

Or use POP.

Same outgoing settings, port 587 with SSL checked.

POP Incoming Email Settings

Using POP to retrieve email will cause a less than optimal experience, especially when you use multiple devices to check your email. We strongly recommend IMAP over POP since this will keep your emails in sync across different devices. If you do need to use POP due to any reason, you can use the following connection information:

  • Incoming Mail Server Name: mail.comcast.net
  • Incoming Mail Server Port Number: 995 (POP3 With SSL)

Right click on the Account Name above the Inbox and go to Properties. Under the Advanced Tab, can you change the settings to the correct IMAP settings?

If you want to change it to POP, if I recall correctly, I don't believe you can change an IMAP account to POP. You have to add a new POP account and remove the IMAP.  You should be able to do it without changing your address. Backup everything first though.

How do I import and export email, contacts, and calendars with Windows Live Mail?

    Hi Jorie,

One possible fix for this concern is removing and adding your email. To better assist you, please answer the questions:

    • Are you using the Windows Mail app or the browser email app?
    • Which email server are you using?
    • Did this happen after an update?

We'll keep an eye out for your response.

Forget what the Comcast tech told you. They are about the worst in the industry. The error message shows you are not receiving mail. Follow the instrucrions here and just use POP or IMAP, not both. For POP incoming, use port 995, not 110.

Thanks SO MUCH Mr. Hagen!  I'm deeply grateful for the promptness of your reply.  However, I think I've made such a royal mess of trying this on my own that now I'm afraid to even attempt to fix it because I don't want to lose the inbox and contacts I have.  I've just spent a ton of time at least copying my contacts.  I can use the Xfinity web program Comcast has which is a lifesaver but somehow not all the contacts seem to be current there.  Weird.

Somehow, all I have is IMAP now.  I deleted the other POP account. But IMAP it isn't working.  When I try to go into the account properties to make the port changes, etc, the server shuts down.  These are the messages now :

*The connection to the server has failed.

    Subject 'Thank you!'

    Server: 'smtp.comcast.net'

Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC0E

    Protocol: SMTP

    Port: 25

    Secure(SSL): Yes

    Socket Error: 10013

*Unable to send or receive messages for the Comcast (8mjc35) account.

    Server: 'mail.comcast.net'

Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC0E

    Protocol: IMAP

    Port: 110

    Secure(SSL): Yes

I was going to call Comcast again but having read your cryptic comment, I want to wait and still hope to fix this myself but I've spent hours on this today--again.

Can you offer any different suggestions?  The article you sent talked about being sure that messages were going to be saved on the server but I can't get back into the old POP3 account to look to see if that option was chosen.  I suspect that what I have now is a conflation of POP3 and IMAP settings.  I tried to set up a new account but I don't want to change my eddress and of course Comcast tells me there is already an account with that ID.  Sigh.
