My computer (running Vista) downloaded my videos from my camera into the .mov format.  I have quicktime on my computer and can play them using that software.  But I want to import the videos into Windows Movie Maker and Movie Maker doesn't recognize the .mov file.  Please help!  I'm trying to make home videos for the holidays.

    Hi Junkmendall,

Welcome to Microsoft Windows Vista Community site.

Some audio and video file formats are not supported in Windows Movie Maker and cannot be imported. Movie Maker is not compatible with QuickTime .mov files. However, if you have a video or audio file that is not supported, you may be able to use a non-Microsoft video editing program to convert the file into a format that Windows Movie Maker supports for which you need to perform an online search for video conversion software to find one that fits your needs (check the file formats which are supported by Window Movie Maker http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Import-video-files-pictures-and-audio-into-Windows-Movie-Maker) , and then import the resulting audio or video file into Windows Movie Maker. Some files also require you to install a codec before you can use the files in Windows Movie Maker.

IMOPRTANT NOTE: Using Third Party Software can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly or may result in some serious problems. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of Third Party Software can be solved. Using Third Party Software is at your own risk.

Let me know if that does or does not work. Good luck!

    Hope this is helpful.

    Thanks and Regards,

Hi "V" - i read your reply - it is helpful in it explains why I can't play my .MOV files (quicktime) on media player OR use movie maker to make a movie out of short files.  You suggest a 3rd party download and then say it is dangerous to use 3rd party (free) downloads.  So, IS THERE A SAFE download? even if it is one I need to purchase?  What is a safe program, to add to my computer, so I can shift my .MOV files to MP4 files, so I can use them in media player and movie maker.  Thank you.  Rosemary

Can someone tell me *WHY* doesn't Windows support Quicktime Mov files???  Bad blood betwen MS and Apple?  European Union thing?  Now I am force to D/L Quicktime bloated player I don't need execpt for MOV files....

    ===========================

Why? I can only guess copyright issues.

(FWIW...it's always a good idea to create a System

Restore point before installing software or updates)

The 3ivx Decoder is supposed to enable WMP to

    play Apple QuickTime .mov files...

    3ivx Decoder

    http://www.3ivx.com/download/

    (not free...30 day trial)

Also...the following freeware players can play QuickTime .mov files.

    Apple QuickTime

    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/

(this is the one you said you did not want)

    QuickTime Alternative

    VLC Media Player

    http://www.videolan.org/

    Media Player Classic

(just unzip it and run it...no installation required)

    Media Player Classic Home Cinema

If you want to install a codec pack...one of the following

    may be worth a try:

    *Proceed At Your Own Risk*

    K-Lite Codec Pack (Full)

    http://www.filehippo.com/download_klite_codec_pack/

FWIW...it's always best if you create a System Restore

point before installing any software or updates.

    CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack)

    Info about CCCP

(FWIW...it's always best if you create a System Restore

point before installing any software or updates)

    Good luck...
