    Hi Joseph,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

To run the Check Disk Utility.

    1. Press Windows key + X and click on Command Prompt (Admin) to open the Elevated Command Prompt. (If prompted for a password, type the password and click allow)
    2. Type the following command:

    chkdsk /rand click Enter.

    chkdsk  /fand click Enter.

    1. If you see this message:

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N). Then press **'Y'**and click Enter.

    4.  Restart your system and let the check disk run.

Improve performance by optimizing your drive

    • Right click on the start button.
    • Select Control Panel.
    • Click Administrative Tools.
    • Select Defragment and Optimize Drives.

You can also refer the below link. (Applies for Windows 10)

I am running Windows 10 Pro on a Dell XPS 8900, 16 GB Memory, I7 CPU.

I ran My hard drive is a WS 7200 RPM, capacity 1 TB.

I ran Check from C: drive > Properties > Tools and there were no error.

The I ran CHKDSK at boot time with the parameters /f /r /x

CHKDSK stopped at 10% with no messages. I waited over an hour and then restarted.

Restarted the system and after a few error message was able to boot. Ran CHKDSK again and it stopped again at 10%. This time I waited over 2 hours and nothing happened.

I booted again and created a System Image without any problems.

Is there a problem with CHKDISK or should I get a new hard drive?

Thank you for the most recent advice and help for my problem.  I was able to carry out the advice  and my PC repaired the drive , Windows Defender scanned and then restarted Windows. But I regret to say it did not correct my problem. I tried the other suggestion of analyse and defrag. this did not help either.   A. C.

    Hi,

It is normal to run CHKDSK on your device and take hours before finishing up. Some stages of CHKDSK runs 3 or 4 hours at times but like what you’ve experience on your end, it finishes up still. If you would reboot your device with a recovery USB then run CHKDSK from the command prompt, you’ll notice that it will display more progress information.

If you have other queries, don’t hesitate to post it here on the Community.
