I work for a university and get free access to Microsoft Office 365 Education as a perk.  What is the difference between this version and the standard Office 365?  Will I miss out on any functionality?  I mostly use it for Word, Outlook, and Excel.  Any difference in functionality/display?  Thank you!

    Hi TLC26,

As Pohn007 said that, there is not difference in the functionality of Word, Outlook and Excel coming from different Office 365 subscription.

    Thanks,

    Linda

"Office 365 Education" is "Office 365",  Specifically which "standard" Office 365 are you asking about?  There is no "standard" Office 365 ...

    It's version 15.35 (170610).  Does that help?

Sorry, I may be wrong. There may be an Office Standard 2013.  It is a hard to get bundle which is why I forgot about it.  But since you have Office Education, you should not have the "Office Standard" bundle (confusing, isn't it).

No, "version 15" only tells me that you currently have Office 2013. I am surprised that you are still using 2013 as part of your Office 365 Education installation.

You can tell exactly which bundle you have by going in to File menu > Account command to display this "Backstage Pane"

I am interested in what it says on the 3rd line of yours, mine (paraphrased) says "MS Office Pro Plus 2013).

Since you (probably) have Office 365 Education (2013), any bundle you buy would have the same core functionality as you currently have, plus the new 2016 features. The big difference between 2016 and earlier versions is that the "full" Business Intelligence feature is limited to specific hi-end Business bundles.  Here are the details:

    http://www.techrepublic.com/article/microsoft-wants-to-bring-better-data-visualization-to-your-enterprise/

If your question is along the lines of "what version of Office should I buy now that I am graduating University and no longer have access to free Office Education provided by the school" you have several options that will include the same basic functionality:

    • buy Office 365 University BEFORE you graduate
    • rent Office 365 Personal
    • rent Office 365 Home
    • buy Office Home and Student 2016
    • buy Office Home and Business 2016

365 University is a bundle that can only be bought by college and University students. It is actually a hybrid license. It is still a subscription, but the subscription is a single US$80 payment for a 4 year license. It may be installed on 2 machines.  In theory, you could buy it now and it would be good for 4 years from now, by which time.

365 Personal is a 1 yr subscription (repeating annual payments!) good for install on one computer.

365 Home is a 1yr subscription good for install on up to 5 computers, and you can "share" those installations with members of your "home" (MS doesn't define "home").

2016 Home and Student and Home and Business are 1 (life) time payment licenses good for install on one computer only. H&B adds Outlook.

This page summarizes the specific features in the various bundles you can buy:

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/b/officeforhomeorpersonal?icid=All\_Office\_subnav\_22092015\_Compare&SilentAuth=1&wa=wsignin1.0

    The key things remember are:

    • you have to keep paying, monthly or yearly for 365, forever
    • 2016 is a one time payment
    • 2016 can only be installed on one machine at a time
    • 365 has a number of extra "bells and whistles" like 1TB of OneDrive space and 60 minutes of Skype time (but those could change at any time ...)
    • 365 also gets one or two (or more) "new featuers" added to the various applications on roughly a monthly basis. So if you want/need to have all of the "latest and greatest" features. These links show what "new features" have been released since the general release of Office 2016

Nominally all of the Office 365 bundles have the same functionality, with 2 exceptions:

    • Some of the Office 365 bundles have different sets of programs
    • "Business Intelligence" (BI) is limited to some business bundles, (not in 365 Education or consumer)

    It's version 15.35 (170610).  Does that help?
