Windows 8.1 - no updates available

After laptop (HP Pavilion 15, Win 8.1 x64) restore to factory settings, I am not able to find/install basic Windows updates. The update search runs whole night without any result. I tried to reinstall laptop again to factory settings with the same result.

ALso I have tried tool WindowsUpdateDiagnostic, which looks like it repaired Updates issue, but nothing positive happened except some green reports. There is no file in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder. Windowsupdate service is running.

There wasn't any issue with these before the factory reset. Laptop was functional 2 years. What to do next with this? COuld I still upgrade to Win10 for free ?

thanks

P.

    Hi,

Yes, you can still install Windows 10 as long as you have the product key of Windows 8.1. To do that, you may refer toAndre Da Costa's Wiki Article here.

As for the Windows update, we suggest running the Windows Update Troubleshooter to automatically fix the issue that's causing the update not to be installed on your device. After running the troubleshooter, you may install any available updates again.

Keep us updated if you need further assistance.

    Thanks

Actually I have checked this with MS support. Suggestion was to stop automatic updates and manually download/patch MS 3102812.

After reboot all finally went smoothly with 200+ actual patches :)

Now I am lucky and safe again...

Error code 0x80070002 usually occurs when some files in the Windows Update are missing even though it was downloaded successfully. To further troubleshoot this issue, follow all the steps provided in the article below:

Windows Update error "0x80070002" or "0x80070003"

Tell us what would be the result.

    hi Paola

both your links are poiting to Win10 upgrade, so I tried first this option.

    1. Action looked promissing until the Win10 instalator got to a step 'Download updates'. There it stucked with messages 'Searching for updates' and 'it should take couple of minutes' in another installation windows. After a hour I gave it up.
    2. Windows update troubleshooter was also deadend. Both links on MSforum are pointing to the same, probably Win10 version wu170509.bin. Running it ended with 0x80070002 error.

In the meantime I ran chkdsk & sfc /scannow with no negative result.
