I would like a gadget on my desktop that shows up as a calendar but when I click on the dates, I am able to write down what events are coming up like a planner...how am I able to do this? or does it not exist? Because I've seen it on other computers...

There are no Microsoft-created gadgets that can do this (although Microsoft does make a Calendar gadget and Sticky Notes, as two separate things).  You can browse a collection of thousands of gadgets created by other companies and enthusiasts on the Windows Gadget Gallery site.

Aside from Gadgets, Microsoft does product a few calendar applications.  Microsoft Outlook is perhaps the most well-known and is used in countless companies around the world.  However, a free alternative is Windows Live Mail -- the consumer counterpart to Outlook.  In addition to sending and receiving your email (don't let the name fool you, it works just fine with any email service, you don't have to use Windows Live), it also includes a Calendar ability -- which*will also optionally, if you want,*sync your calendar to calendar.live.com for anywhere access, or sync to your smart phone.

You can download Windows Live Mail (which includes Calendar) from get.live.com.

There's lots of options.  You can use a calendar program, like Microsoft Outlook or the Windows Live Mail Calendar.  This post is about Windows 7, which did not come with anything like that.  If you don't want to pay for a program, you can use a free online calendar.  In fact, you already have one using the same name/password you used to login to this answers website.  Just go to http://calendar.live.com and login with the same thing to use your free calendar.  If you want, it can even stay in sync with your phone so your calendar is always updated on your PC, online, and your phone.

From http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/gadgets Gadgets are no longer available on our website because the Windows Sidebar platform in Windows 7 and Windows Vista has serious vulnerabilities. Microsoft has retired the feature in newer releases of Windows. Gadgets could be exploited to harm your computer, access your computer's files, show you objectionable content, or change their behavior at any time. An attacker could even use a gadget to take complete control of your PC. If you're concerned about the safety of gadgets you’ve downloaded, find out more about gadgets and steps you can take to protect your PC.
