Unable to download drivers for Xbox One Controller and Wireless Adapter for PC

Hi,

Let's see where to begin with...

Recently, Microsoft released a wireless adapter for PC, that allows usage of the Xbox One Controller wirelessly on the PC. Just like it happened to Xbox360. I already had a Xbox360 controller with the wireless adapter, and it works flawlessly on my Windows 7 and on my Windows 8.1 PC's. I wanted to upgrade to the new Xbox One Controller with the wireless adapter. That is where my problems began...

I went to a Microsoft Store and bought a Xbox One controller with a wireless adapter. And, the box had no drivers on it. Reading the manual and the following page:

http://support.xbox.com/pt-BR/xbox-on-windows/accessories/connect-xbox-one-controller-to-pc

I learn that the adapter and the controller just need to be plugged in and the driver should be downloaded from windows update. However, it did not happen, and it is only show as "another device -> controller" and "another device -> xbox acc". I tried to force update, it did not work, I tried to remove and reinstall, it did not work. It seems almost like there are no drivers for it, neither for Windows 7, nor for Windows 8.1.

All I wanted to know is if there really are drivers for it, and why is it not being able to download automatically. Is there any way to download it manually? Is there a problem with my windows versions? Is it incompatible with 7 or 8.1? Could this be a problem with my windows language (PT-br instead of EN-us)? All I wanted to do was play my games with the xbox one controller! Am I asking too much?

I had for contacts with microsoft support, and it happened as follow:

  • I tried contacting xbox one support, they sent me to windows support.
  • I tried contacting windows support, they sent me to xbox support.
  • I tried contacting xbox support, they sent me to windows support.
  • I tried contacting windows support, it felt like the support could not understand my problem.

Now I am posting in the community forums for some help.

Nobody has any idea on how to solve this issue? =/

Just wait until microsoft decides to release drivers for windows seven?

Beeeeeen searching forever... nothing.. Waste of money on the adapter. It works fine on my Win10 laptop, but not on my Win7 Gaming PC. Love how MS just says " Use the Automatic Driver Update option in Device Manager!" hahaha I laugh every time I see that, that option never works for anything on Win7.... EVER! Typical MS... release something stating it works for an OS, but they dont test? Just assume it will work? At this point they dont give a $h!t, so its up to someone who can modify a Win10 Driver Sig..

    Tsc...

    Just found out the answer:

    https://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/1/490123938430246727/

Basically, it shows how to download updates from:

    http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/

Go there, manually find the drivers and install them.

And, it seems there are NO DRIVERS for Windows 7 or Windows 8.1...

Could this be true? That there are not and there will not be, drivers for Windows 7 or 8.1?

And, even downloading the drivers manually, they don't seem to work... Great piece of hardware, but no support whatsoever... =/

    Hello Davi,

We apologize for the inconvenience caused to you due to this issue. I would like to assist you with further information from here.

The device driver update is supposed to be downloaded automatically when you follow the below steps, and these steps which I presume you have already performed:

    1. Click on the Start button and then choose Control Panel.
    2. Click on the System and Security link. In the System and Security window, click on the Device Manager link located under the System heading.
    3. Enter Device Manager in the search box, and then select Device Manager. Windows may ask you for an administrator password or to confirm your choice.
    4. Locate and expand Microsoft Xbox One Controller.
    5. Right-click the expanded Microsoft Xbox One Controller and select Update Driver Software.
    6. Select Search Automatically for Updated Software.

If you have tried to download the drivers and it failed, I would like to know the exact error message or the notification you received for us to understand the issue better.

There is a way of manually downloading the drivers using the Hardware ID. I will try to explain how you will have to do it.

If the update fails to register and download the requisite drivers for the device, you can also use the vendor id of the Bluetooth device and look for it in the PCI Vendor and Device Lists

    FAQ: http://www.pcidatabase.com/

Unknown and uninstalled devices will be listed under Other. The device will have a yellow alert symbol on it. The properties for the device will show that no driver was found.

Under the Device Properties, select the Details tab and scroll down to Hardware IDs. Each Hardware ID is comprised of some very useful information. The VID value provides the vendor ID and the PID value provides the Product ID of the device. Make a note of the PID value. Enter the PID value in the search box of Update Catalog. In cases where you have multiple device types listed, narrow down your search by also adding in the VID value.

Once downloaded and extracted, you can point Device Manager to this driver to install the hardware.

Please keep us posted on the status of the issue. If it still persists, we would be happy to help you further.

    Thank You.

    Hi Sayan_Ghosh,

    I already went to:

    catalog.update.microsoft.com

And managed to find the driver for the wireless adapter. Only thing is, it is only available for Windows 10! I downloaded the driver anyway, and went to the inf file. In it, i checked and the wireless adapter PID and it is the same for the adapter PID. Does it means that there are no drivers for others version of windows???

Also, I did the same with the controller (connected via USB cable), and, even though I can find the driver for Windows 8 and 7, I still cannot use the driver! When I try to manually point the driver update to the directory where I unzipped (not really unziped, because it is a cab file...) the driver, windows says that it cannot find a compatible driver... =/

You asked what happened when windows tried to update the driver through right click and update driver... It only says that it cannot find a compatible driver. I can post the screen capture, however it is not in English, but in Portuguese... Would it help?
