Not a very sensible choice of wording, IMO... There's no One Size Fits All and we don't do any kind of polls/ratings here in MC.

I'm gonna be really, really honest. Windows Defender is simply not enough for these new viruses and malwares. It scans VERY, VERY slowly, and it's pretty tricky to get updates, JUST like Windows. It was amazing back then, but these new, very threatening viruses won't get caught very easily in this antivirus, as far as I can tell.

I'd recommend getting and trying out different brands. However, as José said, all brands miss out something.

My favourites are Avast free antivirus and Malwarebytes. Their free version is just enough to protect my entire system and it's data.

I'd rate Windows Defender for now: 4/10.

At least Windows Defenter turns of automatically when an other antivirus program is active.

Sadly, as far as I can tell, there is simply no “best” anti-virus or anti-malware package. Almost all of the name brands are good, but I’ve not run into one that really stands out above the crowd at detecting absolutely positively everything.

In other words, no matter what anti-virus package you run, it may miss something. Different packages may miss different things, but there’s no single package that you can count on to catch everything. So it’s possible to still get infected even though your anti-malware tools are completely up-to-date.
