Hello, I have a pretty serious problem here. The split button always worked before this, in fact it was working yesterday but today when I click it it duplicates my clip instead of splits it. I don't know what to do. Thanks in advance! =)

I know what causes this problem
It happens when there is a conflict with an audio file (music or narration). Sometimes if the video you are splitting has some kind of audio attached to it, it encounters this bug. Try moving your audio file to a different part of the timeline so that it isn't touching the video, BEFORE you split.
I'm still experiencing this problem. I don't know how to see what year of movie maker i have, but my computer has the newest windows program. The problem im facing is every time I click the split button instead of splitting the video into 2 clips it wont split it at all; it will duplicate a piece of footage from earlier in the video and tack it onto the end. I need help with this right now. It is very urgent, and if I cant get this fixed i'm buying a mac.
Did you resolve this issue, as im nowing suffering with the same problems without any success of solving.
Have you found any way to fix the issue? I have wasted 2 days now with the same problem (loosing my project twice), and it takes a step further after a few attempts. Every clip below what I try to split becomes white in the timeline, and there is no sound/picture in the preview window from about 2 mins before where I attempted to split to the end of the videos. If this happens to anyone else, my advice is to close the program, don't let it save your work; or when you close and try to reopen it, the entire timeline will be white and show a black picture and no sound when trying to play the preview. I have tried uninstalling essentials, rebooting, then reinstalling, but the problem persists. I have been looking for other free video editing software, but everyone seems to think WMM is the best; so I am open to any fixes that will make this program actually work.
Are you splitting a video? And are you somewhere in the middle of that clip? Can you take a screenshot and post it in a reply to show the issue?
You can Split using the button on the Video Tools | Edit tab, or simply pressing 'M' on the keyboard. It should create a thumbnail of the first frame in the newly split video.
If you are not seeing this, it could be that your file types are not compatible. You can try converting them to .wmv format and see if they behave better.
