how do you remove "table" formatting

there is a movable caret (turns into a diagonal-double arrow when mouse-over) in the corner of one of the cells. Everything above and to the left become part of the "table". How did it get in there? what does it do/purpose? How do I remove it?

Win 7, office 2010, excel.

found out that "table" formatting had been applied. to delete: Table Tools Design tab, Tools-convert to Range.
