...I've read in a few places on here that an update of the Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers would do the trick for my situation.  But when I look on the Lenovo site, the "Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver Windows 7 (64-bit)" lists the following controllers (https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds014898):

This package installs the software (Storage driver) to enable the following devices:

Intel 7 Series Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller

Intel 5 Series 6 Port SATA AHCI Controller

Intel Mobile Express Chipset SATA AHCI Controller

...and mine is the "Intel(R) ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller" (via Device Manager).  Any help in finding the correct drivers to download and install for my particular system to clear up this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Very Truly Yours,

Chris

Hmmm...  not too sure about that - it has been a while since I have used a docking station and then those were VLK keys so it didn't matter.

A good idea though to check both or the most likely to be used environment.

Since the docking stations have so little weight I would go without the docking station, then if you have one handy put it in the docking station and check, then out of the docking station again.

Somebody else following along may have some better advice/experience.

I have the laptop back and the last internal upgrade (T9800 CPU) has been done.  Now I notice on the weight list "docking station".  I have two docking stations for this laptop, each with a different hardware setup, as well as using it on the go.  When I go through the reactivation process should I do the reactivation in one of the docking stations, or sitting on it's own?  Would each docking station have it's own "weight" given the different peripherals attached?  Would the "weight" in and out of the docking stations be a factor?  I want to make sure this never happens again... Dot all the "I's" and cross all the "T's".  Thanks.

    Very Truly Yours,

    Chris

FYI - When Windows is first activated a fingerprint of sorts of your system hardware is sent and stored on the MS activation servers.  Every time Windows starts it checks via a handshake of information with the MS servers to see if the installation is valid.

This checking does not apply to VLKs (Volume License Keys) and dockable PCs are treated with more leniency.

Each piece of hardware in your system (up to ten pieces of information) has a point value, hash value or "weight" and that total of all those components is stored with your license information and becomes the hardware fingerprint tied to your license.

Some hardware like a power supply would have no weight - but other hardware does as you can see in this table:

When you change one of those things and your Windows checks the activation server again with a handshake of information and if the weight of the hardware hasn't changed significantly you will still be good to go.

If the weight has changed significantly the server may think your license has been pirated onto another completely different computer and will report the installation is not genuine.

That is why some smaller changes like just a hard drive will be okay but hardware with more weight or multiple hardware changes result in a very different hardware fingerprint and might upset the balance of things.  Microsoft refers to those kinds of changes as "substantially different" so the activation servers will complain about it.

The MS EULA and licensing is clear that if you do something like replace the motherboard (which would change several things in the table) Microsoft will consider that  a new computer and depend on your license type you may or may not be able to use the same product key for that installation - or they might make you buy a new license.

The best thing to do for not genuine or no longer genuine activation problems is speak to a human being at MS (not any automated or chat help) and to do that you can follow these directions:

Click the Start button/orb and in the box enter:

    slui  4

Choose your nearest country (United States in the example), call the toll-free number to speak to a human being:

Don't press any keys on your phone, don't respond to any voice prompts, just wait, wait, wait and you will be connected to a human being.

Explain your situation and they should help you.

If they don't help or can't help just hang up and call back again and the chances are good that you will talk to a different person and eventually you should find some nice person that will help you.

If a hard drive upgrade is causing a reactivation event in Windows, then a CPU upgrade might cause one as well.  I'm getting the CPU upgraded next week (T9800 @ 2.93 GHz).  After the upgrade is complete I'll attempt a reactivation and let you know how it went.
