No mobile internet connection via Huawei E3272 after Windows 10 Creators update

Hi

After installing Creators Update on Windows 10, my USB LTE modem stopped working for some reason. When I put it in USB 2.0 port on my moterboard, it seems like Windows does detect it, indicating that by a sound and new Local Area Connection popping up in Network Connections, then it keeps Identifying for a long time and after that leaves it with no internet access. I can not access my modem setting via IP, my modem did not come with separate configuration utility, so it uses IP 192.168.1.1 to access settings.

Things I already did were:

  • Reinstalling device software. I did, unplug USB dongle, uninstall its software, did reboot, insert USB dongle back, it would normally emulate that virtual drive for me to install drivers, I gave it admin right and then same thing would happen as before, identifying and then no internet access.
  • Rebooting my PC.
  • I did try running troubleshooter and other than unplugged cable from my onboard ethernet adapter, it did not detect issues.
  • All IPv4 settings were set as automatic, I did not have manually written IP or DNS there.
  • Windows didn't detect my connection as mobile connection, so I couldn't set it to not be managed with Windows.
  • Via ipconfig, I don't even have default gateway and it will not have DNS suffix as "hi.link". Here it is how it looks on older version:

Ethernet adapter Ethernet 3:

   Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . : hi.link

   Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::2886:806e:5fb1:53d3%2

   IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.100

   Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0

   Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

  • Drivers I found for it are from 2015, but it has 2 issues, it is same as I got on my USB dongle and I found it on mobile phone I can't connect to PC to transfer file anyway.
  • I had all Windows updates available before Creators Update installed before installing it.

After fiddling with it for a while, I reverted back, since without internet there isn't whole much I can do.

Device: Huawei E3272

Hardware version: CH1E3272SM

Software version: 22.470.07.00.00

Interface version: 13.100.10.00.1241

My PC:

Intel Core i5 6600

Gigabyte GA-Z170-HD3P

16GB of DDR4

PowerColor Red Devil RX480 8GB

Does anyone have any idea how I could fix it? Only other problem I got with Creators Update was much darker screen. Otherwise I couldn't see any issue. Any suggestion is appreciated. Only thing I can think of is to do fresh install, because even if Microsoft makes an update for it, I won't be able to fetch it after Creators Update. Thanks.

Good news, I fixed my problem.

I actually did all those steps and nothing worked. Then I decided to fully commit and do fresh install. Once again, not working. Then I once again started playing in device manager and nothing...

And then I decided to do something random. And part of random stuff was to go to Network Connections, TCP/IPv4 and manually configure it. And there you go everything went back to life and I am online now.

In case someone else has this issues:

  • hit search, magnifying glass
  • search for "ncpa.cpl"
  • right click your connection, in my case that was "Local Area Connection 2"
  • choose Properties
  • in list, select "Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4)" and hit Properties below
  • choose "Use following IP address".
  • fill in following settings:

IP address: 192.168.1.100

Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

Default gateway: 192.168.1.1

  • Windows will also require you to set DNS server. You can get those from ISP or just use Google DNS. In latter case set:

Prefered DNS server: 8.8.8.8

Alternative DNS server: 8.8.4.4

  • hit ok, then close and close everything up, you are done.

At least for me, above worked. Modem configuration page popped up about 10 seconds after. It also seems to persist if I unplug USB modem.

Thanks for help. I hope Microsoft can resolve this issue, if you could forward it to someone. I understand you guys are very busy, but it would save a headache or two to less tech savy people, if automatic configuration would work. :-)

    Thanks for reply.

I can't test it on another network, it is a desktop PC, with no WiFi capabilities, so I can't make hotspot on my phone and I have no USB cable for my current phone. Ethernet is also not possible, because I have no other connection or device to connect it to and no cable either. I only have this USB dongle for mobile internet.

No, issue doesn't persist on another device, on my netbook, I can use it with Windows XP, unfortunately netbook itself is not really capable of running anything newer, at least not smoothly. But it works just fine there. Also if I roll same computer back to pre-Creators Update version, it starts working normally. Only thing I changed was Creators Update.

I actually did most of the things in that article, I did uninstall drivers, reboot and reinstall. And I did try to update drivers, but since my only means of internet access for this computer is not working, I can't fetch newer version from internet. However on closer inspection, only thing I did not try was Network Reset option.

Also I have a question, when I went back to restore my computer to pre-update state. I noticed option to reset my PC, but keep my files. Now I would like to know, if I did that after installing Creators Update, could I still go back to pre-Creators Update state, or will it overwrite my backup from Creators Update and I would then be left with no option to go back? Which was only reason I didn't touch it, beside not knowing how much it would help.
