Xbox 360 controller keeps disconnecting

Lately I have had some trouble with my wired Xbox 360 controller for PC.  Occasionally (not always) it disconnects from my computer, and usually it just reconnects a few seconds later; sometimes the time between the disconnect and reconnect is so small there is no disruption in controller response and the only reason I know it disconnected is the disconnect sound plays.

However, yesterday, the disconnect problem got even worse and my computer stopped recognizing my controller (the sound you get when you plug something into a USB port didn't play and the controller lights didn't come on). I plugged it into different USB ports and the controller didn't come back on.  And yes, I tested the USB ports to make sure it wasn't the ports, and my computer recognized my USB headphones and flash drive perfectly in those slots. Strangely enough, my computer decided it would start recognizing my controller again five minutes later.  Heck, I even had it unplugged while typing this post and when I plugged it back in, my computer didn't recognize my controller. I then unplugged it, blew into the USB connector, connected it again, and it was recognized.

Is my wired Xbox 360 controller failing?  I'm pretty sure the problem isn't with my computer since the USB slots work fine.

P.S.  My driver version is 6.3.9600.17054

*Edit*

I think I have discovered the problem: when my controller's cable is in certain positions, it disconnects, which I think is a sign of a fraying/frayed wire.

    Hi,

This issue with Xbox controller could have happened due to corrupted or outdated driver. We suggest that you uninstall and reinstall the driver for your device.

We also suggest that you try using the controller to another computer to isolate if the issue is with your computer.

Let us know if you need further assistance.

I'm sorry for not closing this sooner.  The issue is due to a fraying wire.  I did some experimentation and when the wire is in several positions, it loses connection.  If the problem were a corrupted driver this would not be the case.
