Windows 10, Keys repeat while gaming

First of all - this problem just appeared, though I have had no issues with this computer (or the keyboard I've been using) until this point. I have been using other operating systems on other partitions, so maybe that has somehow changed some of windows settings?

When I'm in a game, and I press down a key everything is normal for a few seconds. Then, however, the key flickers on and off. For example, if I try and open a menu (which is achieved by pressing + holding tab) the menu will open normally at first, but then flicker. If I attempt to move (which is done by pressing + holding 'W'), I will move normally at first, but then make jerky movement (like I'm starting and stopping rapidly).

Essentially, it seems like games are treating key presses as a textbox would (holding a key down sends that character once, then after a delay many more times).

I would also like to note that this is not an issue with just one game - I have tried three different games (none of which have ever given any issues like this) and they are all experiencing this issue.

I figured it out - it turns out that my keyboard has it's own memory. I must have accidently turned on some mode to enable this.

Anyways - my keyboard has multiple profiles (for various backlit patterns) that I can switch between. I switched profiles and now it's gone.

If your keyboard does not have this feature (or it didn't work), see if the manufacturer for your keyboard has some sort of software available, some way of modifying the keyboard's memory. Reset it, and you should (hopefully!) be good to go.

I tried resetting the BIOS, no change.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

I ended up resetting my computer, everything on this PC has been deleted (for an unrelated reason). I figured that would do it, but I am still having the same issue.

Filter keys was already unchecked, so I left that alone. For some reason, the "Uninstall Device" option (as well as "Update Driver", "Roll Back Driver", and "Disable Device") were grayed out. I was able to uninstall the drivers by searching for (using the Windows Key):

Device Manager > Keyboards > right clicking keyboard > Uninstall Device

I restarted my computer, no change.

For some reason, not sure if this is relevant, but the keyboard driver appears three times. As in, under Keyboards there are three "HID Keyboard Device". I uninstalled all three, and all three were reinstalled after restarting.

    Hello,

A possible reason why the keys flickers is due to incorrect settings configuration. We recommend that you disable FilterKeys. Follow the steps below:

    1. Go to Control Panel > Ease of Access.
    2. Under Ease of Access Center, click Change how your keyboard works > Uncheck Turn on Filter Keys.
    3. Click Apply then OK.

You may also disable your antivirus to check if the issue still occurs. If the issue still remains, follow the steps below to uninstall and reinstall your Keyboard drivers:

    1. Go to Control Panel > Ease of Access.
    2. Under Ease of Access Center, click Change how your keyboard works.
    3. Under See also, select Keyboard settings > Go to Hardware tab.
    4. Click Properties > Go to Driver tab > Hit Uninstall Device.
    5. Restart your computer.

Keep us posted with the result.
